My entire education is in technical subjects. I have absolutely no formal education in literature.
I hate the word "avid". I read a lot. Probably something over 40 or 50 books a year. (A little less than one a week.) Its hard to say as I bounce around a lot, and how do you count short story collections and poetry anyway.
I'll try just about anything. I listen to friends' recommendations, but I don't often follow them, and I don't pay much attention to what is popular or trendy among them. My own interests and passions are my only real guide. I occasionally will read a newspaper book review section and get inspired to put a few on my list.
I read almost entirely fiction, some biography, some philosophy (essays mostly), some history (not a lot), some science fiction (the classics), some hard boiled detective (the classics and their progeny). I have read and enjoyed some horror, but not much. I never read any political books.
I am most disorganized about my poetry reading, and just read this and that as I bump into it.
