Hi, Fantasy Moon, I am Rosemarie (Freecyclor), and will be recommending a book for you. I looked at your profile and some of your posts, and see that we have a lot of books in common. I have most of MZB's books, particularly her Darkover series and the Avalon books, and cut my teeth on Nancy Drew. Have you read Tigana, by Guy Gavriel Kay? It is a very haunting fantasy.
My first thought for you is a Golden Age (1930s) mystery set on a horse farm in England, called BRAT FARRAR, by Josephine Tey. It is one I love, and have reread many times. It is not long, but fairly unusual, even for that period of very talented writers. I hope it will whet your appetite for the genre and period. If you have read it, let me know, and I will find another.
Best regards,
Rosemarie
