A useless fact (I specialise in them) :
In mediaeval times, piglets used to be sold by the bag load. To save money unscrupulous dealers used to put a kitten in the bag to make up the required weight. This is where we get the phrase "let the cat out of the bag", meaning you've been...
I broke my little finger during netball when I was about thirteen....
It hurt like hell, but I'm very stubborn and have a fear of quacks to this day. So I sat out netball practice. By the end of the day my whole finger was black with bruising and now (fifteen years later) sticks out at a...
I have a cure for this....
I too had the problem with addiction to computer games - I'd agree with Civilization and Railroad Tycoon (now that is a game - shame about version 3), and I'd add in AOE, AOM, Rollercoaster Tycoon, SimCity (all versions), The Sims (and all expansion packs), Vice...
I think it really depends on the book.
Particularly complex books need additional sign posting in the form of chapter headings, however I agree that sometimes they destroy the mystery of the book if used badly.
I too like the little cryptic quotations at the beginning of chapters - I have...
I think it is supposed to be ironic ie - he is so badly disfigured that everyone thinks he is english, however he ended up burnt and lying in hospital precisely because he wasn't english (he was hungarian). when the authorities found out his identity they arrested him, which forced him to run...
We have Curly Wurlys in our part of London - I had one the other week - honestly.
A debate we were having at work last week:
Milky Bar or Dream (the new Cadbury white chocolate)?
For me it would have to be Milky Bar but they just aren't big enough. :(
As for the original question...
I sympathise as did the same thing myself today. Was folding up a letter. :(
For that amount of pain, you certainly expect to have a really spectacular injury to show off to all your friends.
Sadly mine just bled like nobody's business for five minutes then disappeared as if it had never...
I have to agree about Once - I didn't like it at all. It had no substance to it, the story line seemed to be secondary to the soft porn which began to get very tiresome. If I want soft porn I'll read Jackie Collins.
I'm under the impression (rightly or wrongly) that there aren't many horror fans on this site. But surely someone must have read some of James Herbert's stuff?
He is one of my personal favourites - I find him far more 'scary' than Stephen King.
Have read most of his stuff more than once and...
Try the Genesis Code by John Case. Not as good as The Da Vinci Code but still very memorable. Its kind of similar in that it is about hiding historical / religious stuff, quite damning on the catholic church and leaves you with that 'what if?' feeling.
I don't keep a list of books I've read but I do keep a list of books I own, on a Excel spreadsheet.
It details the name of the book, author, publisher, copyright date, edition, hardback/paperback, comments (eg what language it's in, if it's a first edition and worth something etc etc).
Sad...
I thought this was great. I'm not usually inclined to sit through two full posts of narrative but it kind of hooked me. Very thought-provoking. There is enough material there to make a novel - perhaps using flash backs of his life etc, and maybe keeping us guessing as to his genetic routes...
My favourite's would be The Stand, The Green Mile and 'Salems Lot. In fact the only one of his I didn't like was Gerald's Game. I find other horror writers scare me more than King but I do love his style of writing.
