possible opening(please be gentle with me)

Congrats on making a start - seems to me you have a lot of good ideas and you have certainly given a good picture of the atmosphere and the world you are describing. I would agree with Ashlea though. I found the first couple of sentences quite long and, although there are lots of different...

    Britain's Best Sitcom

Anyone catch this on Saturday night? I am scandalised that the Vicar of Dibley came third - beating Fawlty Towers and Dad's Army to name but two. Fawlty Towers at number four - what was that about? Who was voting? No surprise that Only Fools and Horses came first - it was my second...

    Cornetto

I would definitely say cornettos. Google agrees with me: if you search for the word 'cornettos' it brings back nearly 700 hits, however if you put in 'cornettoes' it gives you 22 hits and asks you if you meant to search for 'cornettos'. :)

    The curse of the Ottomen

Ummmm.....in a wardrobe, under the bed, on a bookcase, in a suitcase on top of the wardrobe, in the chest of drawers, in a old cardboard box in the corner, under the floorboards (well that's my bedroom anyhow). Sorry, mumbling again. ;)

    What's your occupation?

What do you do for a crust? Having opted out of the rat race for the last six months, I have reentered the world of work rejuvenated and in my previous profession. I work in Human Resources (Personnel) and am usually found either hiring or firing people (sad but true). I quite enjoy my job...

    The curse of the Ottomen

I've just looked it up in a few dictionaries and thesauruses and in none of these did it mention that it was a chest.

    John Le Carre

I agree completely. My first (and only) le Carre was The Tailor of Panama. I couldn't get into it at all. I don't have any plans to read the others. :(

    Kodak Moments

Standing on a hill in Eastern Europe and watching two huge (and separate) electric storms on a ruined citadel in the distant- on the left sheet lightening, to the right forked lightening. Don't think it would've come out on a camera but would have made a beautiful photo nonetheless. Something...

    Your Pets

Where I live now (block of flats in London) we aren't allowed to keep pets. :( Previously though I have owned a pet sheep (Snowflake), a pet donkey (Sindy), a big dopey golden labrador (Chloe), one black labrador (Molly), 5 cats (Tom, Jerry, Ginger, Mouser, Moggie), 2 goldfish (Dempsey and...

    Best short story

Although I haven't read many short stories I have to go with The Fall of the House of Usher by EAP. I also remember from long ago the short stories from Tales of the Unexpected - they were really good.

    Ask Me Anything ...

At the risk of sounding pedantic :D this is not the correct answer. I would like to know what the significance of the LEFT hand is over the RIGHT hand. (Hint this is an ancient custom - dating back at least 2,000 yrs) Other than that Martin - very impressive. :)

    Ask Me Anything ...

why is the wedding ring placed on your left hand and not your right? why is the sky blue? And just because we are in a book forum: The popularity of this novel was the deciding factor in the conquest of the Anglo-Saxon language (which would evolve into modern English) over...
