I also picked up two more non-fiction books recently. One is called "the ties that bound" about family life in medieval Europe I think... and the other has to do with the intellectual pursuits of colonial New Englanders.
I can't wait to start these!

Sounds interesting. Where is your site? I read a book by Sherri S. Tepper a while ago called "Gibbon's Decline and Fall." It was awesome. I would love to read "The Gate to Women's Country" with your group.

I just started reading this amazing book. I spotted it in a box on the floor of my favorite used book store. It hadn't been priced yet and the proprietor gave it to me for $3!
The English Common Reader; by Richard D. Altick... A social history of the mass reading public 1800-1900.
I took my...
Now I'm on to a new sci-fi book by
James White. It's called; "The Galactic Gourmet." It's part of a series called "Sector General" whose first installment was published in 1962. As I said, I don't read much sci-fi so two in quick succession is almost unheard of for me.
Oddly, I got the book...
Hi,
don't get discouraged, Chadster. I love your question... it's very tough to answer though...there's Peter S. Beagle's description of the unicorn on the one hand... but then there's Anne Bishop's mouth-watering description of Lucivar, Daemon and Saetan on the other... Or Tolkien's Balrog...
I read a lot of fantasy and not much sci-fi, but recently I read a Sci-Fi book worth mentioning. It is called; "House of the Scorpion" by Nancy Farmer.
The characters are really well developed, very real and human. The story is imaginative and engaging. I loved it.
Has anyone else read this...
Yes, a man's thoughts in a woman's body. Thats pretty much what I meant. Friday? Sounds kind of familliar... I must have seen it but not read it. I'll look for it next time I go shopping.

Yes, I see what you mean. That is a good analogy.
In the same vein... I'd say women write women and men write transvestites... nothing wrong with transvestites... just saying they are not women.
If that makes any sense.

Yes, i've seen some male characters written by women who were just a little off from what I'd expect. Do I understand you to be saying this is not as in-your-face and jarring as what I am describing w/ female characters and male authors? Its actually pretty interesting to look at how one gender...
Hello Everyone,
I have 3 kids; 9 months, 6 years and 9 years old. Naturally they have tons of books... The 9 year old is quite independant and prefers to read comic strip books such as Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, Foxtrot and Garfield. He readily listens to Harry Potter, LOTR and Winnie the Pooh...
Hi Prolixic,
I don't think its bad writing, I really think its just that most men for whatever reason don't have much of a clue how women really think. I know from long discussions with my Sweet Vampyre that the way he thinks is very different. From my perspective, it seems that men see things...
I've read the first two and am reading the third now. They are different from any other series I've read. George R R Martin is quite willing to kill main characters seemigly out of the blue. He slaughters them left and right. I find it a bit off-putting, really. Things continualy go from bad to...
Oh very cool. Thanks for responding! Some of these are familliar to me and some are new. (yay!)
I am currently enjoying "Unicorn & Dragon" by Lynn Abbey. Thanks for all the new names and good ideas.
