    Recommending books you haven't read

I have to agree with the idea of squashing the thread about recommending books you haven't read, or at least scanned and reviewed...makes sense to me.

    Another shooting in american uni

Libra6Poe says: He probably thought none of you were in the mood to listen to him anyway...your minds, like everyone else's...were on the tragic events at Virginia Tech. Good for him.

    Promoting B&R Offline?

I've seen enough here to know this is a good, solid site. I have to ask: How long have you been online with the site? AB is considering B and R for inclusion on our Links and Friends page.

    Recommendations

We're going to review this book soon, using video. I know this is an old saying, but sometimes it IS true: If you haven't read this book, you should. "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" - By Ishmael Beah Ishmael is only 27 now, and he lives in the U.S. When he was 11, and...

    Author fatigue

I think Alistair Maclean was the first author where I suffered true 'author fatigue.' Started out with his first book, 'HMS Ulysses' and it was pretty good, then in order of his writing, 'The Guns of Navarone,' (better) and then on to 'South by Java Head' and 'The Secret Ways'. (excellent)...

    Seafaring Novels

'South by Java Head' by Alistair Maclean is FAR better than 'The Guns of Navarone. Much takes place at sea. BTW, Maclean's book 'The Secret Ways'...definitely his best work. You'll never forget it. It was one of his earlier works. As his drinking progressed, the writing suffered. I say this...

    Another shooting in american uni

As usual for us, AB had a few things to say on this subject over at Straight Talk. Standard warning from the staff: We don't call it 'Straight Talk' for nothing...

The first sentence in the book you're reading

"I wrote my first software program when I was thirteen years old. It was for playing tic-tac-toe. The computer I was using was huge and cumbersome and absolutely compelling." 'The Road Ahead' by Bill Gates.

    Publish America: Making Books

SabrinaLove says: I don't understand why LSI is charging that person you mentioned so much. LSI charges us $3.36 for single copies of a 200-page 6 x 9 inch paperback. 'Normal retail' on six/nine is about 9-11 dollars in stores. Our wholesale rate for that book to bookstores would be...

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

I'm not going to give an opinion on 'The Da Vinci Code' one way or the other. However, I am constantly amazed by the number of people I meet who HAVE read the book...and they discuss it as if it were fact, or at least theoretically possible. It's fiction.

    Publish America: Making Books

There are two kinds of POD, one is good, the other bad. Publish on Demand: This is where you take your manuscript and mail it off to a company who charges you to make a complete book out of it. Most of the time, they do little or no editing. If they edit, it's only because they need to in...

    Publish America: Making Books

Have no illusions...PublishAmerica is the worst of the worst, and well-known...in a negative way. They are INFAMOUS. Over at Speculations there is a thread about them with over a thousand posts, all bad. They represent the lowest form of literary life, i.e. charging money to hard-working...

    Seafaring Novels

Do submarine books count? If so, I highly recommend this one: "The Sea Wolves: Germany's Dreaded U-Boats of WW II" by Edwin C. Hoyt. (Not to be confused with 'The Sea Wolves' by Wolfgang Frank.) This one is the best sub book I ever read. Hoyt really did his research. One of the best parts...

    Getting Known

Too late for the edit function: This book is a must-have for authors: 'The Complete Idiot's Guide To Getting Published' by Jennifer Basye Sander and Sheree Bykovsky. This book is a down-to-earth, blue-collar guide to the REAL world of publishing. It covers subjects from 'Why Do You Write?'...

    The Internet Archive

I sure hope this isn't a duplicate posting on the same subject. I don't think it is... The Internet Archive has got to be one of the best free sources on the internet. They are a rarity on the Internet: Free, legal, downloads of thousands of classic films, books, audio files, Old-Time Radio...
