What do you want to be when you grow up?

There is something to be said about being old and grumpy. I can't wait to drink coffee all morning in a doughnut shop or coffeehouse, all the while, complaining wistfully about government, taxes, young people, old people, buildings, the air, and just about everything else.

How do y'all stick with 1 avatar?

A cat and a book, what else does a person possibly need?

    DECEMBER 2013 DEADLOCKED VOTE AGAIN

A vote on a forensics theme is DEADlocked. Oh people. I just don't know if it would be a "lively" conversation Perhaps there will be "stiff" dialogue at first? Are we looking for what is "buried" in the book? :rofl Puns galore, puns galore.

Where e-readers go when they die

Kindle HD fire in hand, life is good now. Seriously though, this is more of a tablet than a reader. I don't mind surfing the web, watching the videos, and the like, but this is not a reader. A point of minor quibble I know, but something I find disagreeable.

Living with Anxiety / Low Self Esteem Stories

Among more comedic lines, I like Woody Allen films on the topic.

Where e-readers go when they die

I am hopeful that amazon outlasts my lifetime as a business. I'm not sure what will happen to the content if they ever went belly up due to derivatives trading or something.

    You now feel really old

More evidence of pending mortality........... ......when your new employee's significant other was a former student of yours. That is feeling old.......

    Excellent articles as of late

Meadow-I love the topic! To me, they are both equally relevant, perhaps fiction is just more stylish in delivering a given point. Historians like Joseph J. Ellis are famous for bringing fiction like story telling to non-fiction. This reminds me of the whole humanities vs. science debate that...

Where e-readers go when they die

Well, my first generation kindle gave up the ghost and died. :( You know the screensaver thingie? I hit the slider and half of it remained, while the text that I was reading appeared on other parts of the screen. I've unplugged it, left it off a week, recharged it after letting it run down...

    RIP Lou Reed

His collaboration with Metallica raised quite a few eyebrows among the critics. Personally, I really liked what they did. Of course, the VU stuff goes without saying.

    National Novel Writing Month

For those who don't know, November is National Novel Writing Month. There is a pledge whereby high school student pledge to write 30,000 words a month. Adults should be able to reach 50,000 according to the site. http://nanowrimo.org/ On a whim, I joined my literature teacher and her...

    Charles Dickens; American Notes

Just started this on a whim and I'm glad that I did. I love the writing on this time period in America. I was pleasantly surprised to see the copious writing on the state of prisons and treatment of the mentally ill. This doesn't come close to DeTocqueville's observations, but it's the best...

Dogs, Cats, Rats...What Kind of Critters Do You Have?

Twelve years ago, we purchased a terrier mix that is still with us today, she must be 19. I've heard small dogs live a long time, but I might rename her Methusaleh. Last year, we bought a cat and I'm now a cat person.

    Richard Dawkins

"This just in.....a group of scientist-terrorists have hijacked "quantum physics, aged 104. The group is in intense negotiators with government SWAT teams. At the moment, discussion is under way for a swapping of beakers and microscope lenses to the government, in exchange for pocket...
