I think one of the better reactions to Engdahl's comments appeared on the Literary Saloon, in which they discussed translations and world literature in America, newspaper coverage, and the ratio of translations to various languages.
I hope not. What self-publishers come by, don't tend to stay too long. Usually, it's a bit of subterfuge (buy this book by a new author, conveniently forgetting to say they are the 'author'), the thread gets binned, they never come back.
A bunch of recent buys, since I haven't posted to this thread in a while:
The Queue, Vladimir Sorokin
Where Europe Begins, Tawada Yoko
The Black Sheep and Other Fables, Augusto Monterroso
Borges And The Eternal Orang-Utans, Luís Fernando Veríssimo
Bonjour Tristesse / A Certain Smile, Francoise...
I think I'm swaying toward Arnošt Lustig winning the prize. I would be happy with it being Makine, Ugresic, Eco, Roth, or Achebe.
For purely selfish reasons, I'd like a novelist to win, since I'd be more likely to read that person's output, but if it were to be a poet, I would like the Academy...
I've finally got around to watching the debate and, for me, I thought Palin was a bit rubbish as a debater. While Biden seemed good at putting out answers, statements, counterstatements, and stats in answer to questions put to him, Palin didn't seem to want to engage with any of the questions...
That's good. Even classics get the full range of one star through five. At least you're no Deborah MacGillivray.
To expand, the ratings themselves mean nothing. Some liked the book, others didn't. Big deal! It's the comments they leave, however, that let you know whether to trust the ratings...
I'm taking a short break until the weekend with Roth's Letting Go, as it's just too big and I'm only getting the chance to read it in small bites.
So, I've turned to Dubravka Ugrešić's Nobody Home and there, on page thirty-five, opening an essay titled, My Hometown, is this little passage:If I...
I take it that particular news source is of a Republican slant, given the ignorant comments in reply to the article, and the way the report was edited?
Who's the one that wants to be a writer?
Oh, it should, most certainly, especially when there's potential there. For others, though, it's probably best to have an honest word in their ear and trot out the old don't-give-up-your-day-job line. This is an instance of the latter.
I'm not one for...
Scientists in Switzerland were not trying to recreate the Big Bang, but instead to prove (or disprove) the existence of the Higgs boson. The aftermath of the Big Bang, and not the Big Bang itself, is what is of relevance here.
You know, it's hard to take you seriously when you can't even string...
Yes. After all, their job is editing, not answering the mail.
An agent helps. Another thing that helps is that it be publishable. Third, if a book is going to be about current affairs, that the author be an authority on the subject shouldn't be too much to ask.
I've read everything by Barker, with the exception of Weaveworld (tried twice - no luck), Mister B. Gone (I've probably grown out of him by this point), and his kiddy books. I've got two volumes of his plays on my shelves and a personalised copy of Galilee. But Sacrament is his best work, I...
