I've read these many moons ago, and remember liking them very much. What Barker does with them is to take many well known horror tropes - the Golem, the Vampire, Frankenstein's monster, the Doppelganger, etc. - and rework them.
A number of them have spawned films, with The Forbidden becoming...
Thomas, the list you posted is not the longlist for the Prix Goncourt. I noticed this earlier in the day. This is the correct longlist:
Une éducation libertine, Jean-Baptiste Del Amo
Le silence de Mahomet, Salim Bachi
Le rêve de Machiavel, Christophe Bataille
C'était notre terre, Mathieu...
I have Adam's previous novel, Cliffs, sitting on my shelves. It's one I want to read, but feel that it's navel-gazing qualities may be best left to a long, lazy rainy day.

For your information, Waterstone's is the dominant chain in the UK and I counted three of them there. There's also three Blackwell's, out of the sixty or so stores in the UK. And you'll notice that, at number 27, is that well known independent Borders. ;)
As I said, it's out in the UK shortly - the end of this week, I think. Prior to that there's been hype. The sizeable sum paid for the rights no doubt justify the effort put into making it sell so that the cash can be recouped and start making a profit.
