At the time of writing it was only one of two, so no big deal. Desperate? No, I don't think so. Enquiring? Curious? Sounds better.
You cannot deny that my reply, that you incited, was a passionate response.
At first I thought, back at the start you were calling that passé, but then I remembered...
Hello, first a welcome. Then down to brass tacks:
Passé, or that you couldn't get your books traditionally published? I would venture the latter for traditional publishing is in no way passé. Book sales are up, more people are buying good old, hold in your hands, smell those pages, books by the...
Personally, when I read it last year, I didn't think the book was good at all. It felt like Lalwani had her story planned from the start and then, only then, thought about the characters to put into it. As such, the characters felt constrained by the narrative than by their own motivations. But...
Nikita Lalwani was today named the winner of the £10,000 Desmond Elliott Prize for Gifted, a story about a maths prodigy growing up in 1980s Cardiff, published by Penguin Books.
Penny Vincenzi, Chair of the Judges, comments,“Gifted is a book of extraordinary range; it is touching, tender...

Maria Dzielska's Hypatia Of Alexandria springs to mind. Apologies for that review, though, as I wrote it years ago when I was tentatively trying to gather my thoughts on books. In fact, I posted the review here too.
The nearest equivalent, I suppose, would be the MA in Creative Writing. The best known establishment for this is the University of East Anglia - their MA in Creative Writing has given us the likes of Ian McEwan, Kazuo Ishiguro, Tracy Chevalier, and Anne Enright; all authors you'd expect to see...
For the last few years, I’ve been aware of Robin Jenkins’s books, notably his best known work, The Cone Gatherers, as they were perennials on the Scottish Books shelves of local stores. Of the man, however, I knew nothing and was surprised to find that he died as recently as 2005. Surprised for...
I just spotted this thread, pretty much because of the poor spelling in the title. No, these threads are useless as a) you have a Currently Reading section in your profile, and b) if you want to talk about a book, no matter how little, start a thread on it.
I really enjoyed the film, starring Gary Cooper, when I was young. But it's been so long, I've grown up, and, while I've forgotten most of the film, I have no desire to read Rand.
