I wouldn't lose any sleep over how much writers like Rushdie, García Márquez, Ian McEwan or Margaret Atwood are making these days. I'm pretty sure their books sell enough copies all over the world to allow them to live pretty comfortable lives.
As for the 10 writers on the highest paid authors...
The season premiere was fantastic, episode 2... not so much. I've had it with Foreman and Thirteen, they've become even more annoying than Chase and Cameron (which I didn't think was possible). My favorite line from ep. 2:
"Reading novels is a deep and singular pleasure, a gripping and mysterious human activity that does not require any more moral or political justification than sex."
Philip Roth
La solitude des nombres premiers, Paolo Giordano
La piel fría, Albert Sánchez Piñol
Le fait du prince, Amélie Nothomb
El arte de la distorsión, Juan Gabriel Vásquez
Just After Sunset, Stephen King
La cinquième femme, Henning Mankell

These were some of my favorite books when I was about nine or eleven. Back then I was reading a lot of books that were not meant for my age but these are the ones that I think are age-appropriate:
Pappa Pellerin's Daughter, by Maria Gripe (and also the Elvis Karlsson books)
Tove Jansson's...
Check out "The Book of Sand", it's a collection of short stories. I also like "The Book of Imaginary Beings", which is a catalogue of... well, imaginary beings :D
Full of himself would be about right. I have never been able to enjoy his writing (except for maybe a couple of short stories) and believe me I have tried. Since Spanish is my native language I am pretty sure that nothing was lost in translation. He's sort of a literary god in Spanish speaking...
Lists are fun! As long as you don't let them ruin your life...
I've read 119 from this list and have another 17 already in my bookshelves waiting to be read.
There are many books and authors I had never heard of and quite a few I wish I never had... :D
