December 2009: Philip K. Dick: VALIS

I re-read a couple chapters in I am Alive and You are Dead by Emmanuel Carrere to get a better handle on VALIS and here is what I learned. ~Dick chose the name Horselover Fat because Philip means lover of horses in Greek and Dick means fat in German. ~His Exegesis is about 8,000 pages...

Will monkeys really type Shakespeare if given enough time?

I'm still confident it's going to happen.

    I Recommend...

Too bad. It's a game and you're playing. Not to worry I can choose for you. You want: A religious/philosophical, introspective work of esoteric metafiction. I recommend: VALIS by Philip K. Dick (And if you act now you can contribute at the December Book of the Month thread ;) ) I want...

December 2009: Philip K. Dick: VALIS

I'm about a third the way through and I'm mostly liking it although the religious philosophy is somewhat hard to follow at times. I didn't realize the ways in which this book resembles PKD's life, with the drugs, writing the "exegesis", fascination with religion and of of course a California...

    An article for Chris 302116

Of course to be able to collect the benefits you have to be separated from your job involuntarily. One can't simply quit after 20 years and collect unemployment. At least not in my state. I've been thinking how unemployment could be reformed and one of the ways I think that might be worth...

    Geographic awareness needed

Maybe that historical reason is due to our imprecise speech here in the U.S.. Just know that when we say European we mean it more as a state of mind then some mere geographical technicality.

    Best time travel Sci-fi book?

Slaughterhouse-Five - Kurt Vonnegut Hawksbill Station - Robert Silverberg

    Harlan Ellison

Those are great. I never considered the idea that there are semantic differences for science fiction and sci-fi. His point in the first clip about writing is common sense, but I'm sure there are plenty of writers who do give away work for the promise of exposure and publicity which does nothing...

    Geographic awareness needed

By the way Referendum 71 is very close to being approved. There is another issue going on here as well to determine whether or not the signers of the petition (to get the referendum on the ballot) have a right to remain anonymous despite state law for diclosing such information. Okay, back to...

Most hated 'classic' novel you've actually read

I could not agree more with you. I remember having to fake a book report on this one. Of course I had already suffered through about 500 pages of this doorstop so I figured I could answer any questions somebody who hadn't read it at all might ask.

It is a fair statement if by being poorly taught you mean that it is mostly neglected by school districts to begin with and that it is not the presentation by teachers that is affecting students' understanding of the topic. My experience in Washington has been that along with civics geography...

A lecture on how schools stifle creativity

I agree with him in that schools are still stuck in a mode that was better suited to a time when the country needed large quantities of only slightly skilled labor and that our economy no longer resembles that so neither should our school system.

What newspaper op/ed writers do you like?

Charles Krauthammer - Once you are no longer distracted by his ghoulish appearance his articles are often quite good. He is an intelligent right of center columnist who can make a an argument or point something out without condescending to levels more common from his colleagues.
