    School cell phone policies

I think you misunderstand when I say "emergencies" despite my use of quotations. I am talking about petty day-to-day crap that students are using their phones for 99 times out of 100 and then saying it was an emergency. How does a child at school with a cell phone do any good in an event like...

What are you listening to Right now?

Michael Franti & Spearhead - Life in the City

    Bret Easton Ellis

I read The Informers and Less Than Zero recently and liked both a lot. He makes Los Angeles/Hollywood seem more like an emotionless hell rather than as the paradise it is often portrayed to be.

    Dan Simmons

The Terror is excellent so far. Just started a few days ago.

    School cell phone policies

In my district phones are allowed but are not supposed to be used during class. This, of course, is hardly the disincentive the kids need to not use them and they are a major source of distraction. The district is currently considering whether or not to ban them outright. Parents tend to...

Yet another "100 greatest books" list...

Hiya Thomas. I have to take advantage of the sunny days when we have them around here and lately we've had a lot of them.

Yet another "100 greatest books" list...

Of course it's biased. If you are reading a list of books from a website in English you can safely expect the books will be of the same origin. This is such a common criticism. I'm still waiting for that ideal list with a single book from every country on the planet so I can know what the actual...

Suggestions: October 2009 Book of the Month

    Absurdistan - Gary Shteyngart

    Mustard? Really?

I'll bet he gets the teriyaki jerky with his slurpy at the 7-11 too. What a snob.

    Gay marriage

The ugly chicks get the swimsuit competition and the hot ones continue to answer contemporary world problems.

Suggestions: July 2009 Book of the Month

I was thinking maybe another take on Greek myth with The King Must Die by Mary Renault.

    Gay marriage

I'm going to guess that would be a "No, I don't think the other states should follow suit" or something to that effect.

I've got The Fixer, just have not read it yet. I read The Assistant when I was in high school and really liked it so I thought I'd try another one. I'm still holding it out for it to be nominated as BOTM so's I can talk about it then.

March 2009: Edward P. Jones: The Known World

You've caught me with a semantic oversight. So it is not clear that when I say "slavery has ended in America" that what I am saying is that the systematic capture and subjugation of various African peoples and subsequent physical abuse by their European and American captors is no longer a...

March 2009: Edward P. Jones: The Known World

It showed a single aspect of humanity's depravity - slavery. I have a hard time believing Jones would think that since slavery has ended in America so has our depravity.

20 Worst Album Covers of the Year

I agree with every last one of those.

How long should the school year be?

It was for me. I'm not one who defines himself by a job though and so that large amount of time off is important to me. However, if it is decided that a longer school year is what is necessary to improve education I would not be adverse to the idea so long as I am being compensated...
