Sounds good. I've had one in mind too. Hopefully it's available via the web too.

    Ted Chiang: Understand

Another excellent story from Ted Chiang and this one may be my favorite of his. If you liked Flowers for Algernon and its idea of artificially increasing intelligence you should like this one too.

    The Miami Heat (NBA)

So would the results of the 2010/11 NBA season. Anything short of a championship is going to be a bust.

Books that take place near the sea/on a coast

I didn't know that about Cannery Row. Island is of course set on an island, but the ideological storyline is what I remember about that book much more so than its setting. Good book, I thought. Two more to add: Herman Melville Patrick O'Brian

    Dale Bailey: Heat

I did. I kind of got the idea where this was going ahead of time and still really enjoyed it.

Books that take place near the sea/on a coast

Those that I've read and can remember: Being Dead - Jim Crace The Island - Peter Benchley Cannery Row or The Pearl - John Steinbeck (probably most of Steinbeck's novels would qualify)

    Steampunk

My wife read Boneshaker and she seemed to like it. It's outside of what she normally devours, but I've heard good things generally. I may get to The Windup Girl as well as Boneshaker this summer just so I can compare them with The City & The City seeing as all three were nominated for Nebula and...

    MMA death, first fight

I've always been one of those boxing fans that despises MMA/UFC because of its lack of restraint and style, but I have to admit that when people die from the purposeful physical contact from another person's fists it makes boxing much harder to defend. I watched a fight in 2001 where a fighter...

recommendations for good Sci fi/fantasy books

Coyote series by Allen Steele (should be read in order of publication) Engines of God series by Jack McDevitt (my favorites were Deep Six, Chindi and Omega and they all deal with cosmic phenomena; these stories don't necessarily need to be read in any particular order) Mid-Flinx by Alan Dean...

    Eastern Promises

Nobody can say Viggo isn't dedicated to his craft.

    Document Conversion

No, I'm afraid that's not possible. See, you're book is just a book and while it can be written in in can not be edited in .doc format because that is something for computers to do.

Ambrose Bierce: An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

    Good link, thanks Libra.

    Inglourious Basterds

    A.K.A. I misunderstood it.

    Larry Niven: Ringworld

I bought the sequel to that called The Gripping Hand and I'll probably get to reading it this summer. I hope it's worth it.

    Inglourious Basterds

Boring? Nah. Yentl was boring. The Paper Chase was boring. Inglourious Basterds is either a lot of fun or misunderstood. Boring just was not a possible outcome for the film.

May 2010: Karen Joy Fowler: Sarah Canary

    Aah, take your time.

Ambrose Bierce: An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

Great story. I am only just now discovering Ambrose Bierce (as far as I can remember). Any other stories of his to recommend?
  19. joderu95

    Dale Bailey: Heat

A story about a soldier sent home to visit his family during WWII.

    Larry Niven: Ringworld

I actually gave up on it too although I don't think I gave it a long enough chance. May try again someday, but I'm pretty sure I prefer my Niven mixed with some Pournelle.
