Martin, I, too, go browsing the old fashioned way, but must say, that not every good book hides behind a promising cover, so eventually you miss out there. :)
Hey,
I wonder what you guys do (apart from browsing this forum) in order to "find new authors". I find it immensely difficult, locating "new" interesting writers by using the big online retailers help like Amazon + Barnes & Noble. Mostly because their "recommendations" are built on sales...
You know how it is, every aspiring Fantasy-Author gives his readers some maps of his dreamt-up world with countries, cities and the general lie of the land to orient himself while immersing into his story.
I have started reading the Fencer's Trilogy (Colours in the Steel being the first...
Stephen King did direct Maximum Overdrive based on his novella "Trucks"
also Clive barker (Hellraiser, Lord of Illusions) tends to direct his own literary products.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading I am Legend.
The purported Film by Ridley Scott has been in talks for eons, Arnold Schwarzenegger was set to star. Well, before He decided to do T3 and become Governator this project has been shelved. No talks of resurrection (sic.) yet.
Just finished Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds (enjoyed it tremendously), moved on to Colours in the Steel (Pt. 1 of the Fencers Triology) by K.J. Parker.
I second the votes for Snow Crash as a highly entertaining Cyberpunk Roller Coaster Ride. Go get it now.
Also liked Cryptonomicon, already own (not yet read) The Diamond Age and will read the Baroque Cycle once it's complete. Quite ingenious writing!
To add my 2 cents: I qould say that "I say" in this case means more like "I think":
"I say ... I made him understand"
Modern version would be maybe "I would have thought he understood what I wanted to do"

Can anyone recommend a good (meaning relatively comprehensive) site, that lists books to which movie rights have been picked up and maybe even how far in development the scripts are and who's involved?
Off an on I stumble over a nearly-missed info like "...which has been picked up for a...
Thanks so far for all your insight. Me having neither read the book norseen the movie assumed he WAS english.
So maybe if you could elaborate on why one would THINK him to be english (or at least the authorities) that might already be it.
Cheers,
Jan
For a quiz I need your help, people:
What meaning does "English Patient" have in the Story (Book/Film) apart from the obvious (him being a patient of and being english)?
There must be some (hidden/clever/whatever) other implied meaning.
Anyone?

I don't really think Ludlum compares to the likes of Matt Reilly and Vince Flynn when we're talking about "lots of action" (at least the Ludlums I read so far didn't relate this idea to me ;))
I'd recommend Brad Thor (Lions of Lucerne and Path of the Assassin) both certainly not high concept...
Went to London, got me some books to add to my already large TBR:
They were just so CHEAP ;)
Alastair Reynolds - Chasm City
Tess Gerritsen - The Surgeon
China Mieville - Perdido Street Station (Forum Rec.)
Lee Child - ??? (early Jack Reacher novel)
K.J. Parker - Books 2+3 of the Fencer...
I just had an animated debate with my girlfriend, concerning the advertising (or better lack thereof) for books in Germany.
We just got back from our annual London-Trip (of course each brought back a mighty pile of books) and I really liked the many book-advertisements in the tube. Made me...
Why it doesn't count? It was published waaaaay after the original "Trilogy in four Parts", has nothing more to do than the title with DA's original BBC radio series and was made only for one reason (well, 2): Money and pleasing the sort of fans demanding "more".
It's the exact equal of an...
