Surprisingly I don't have that many that I absolutely don't get at.
One is the Tommyknockers by Stephen King (bought it for my first transatlantic flight, back in 1989, being a huge King fan). Never got into it,tried three times since, never made it.
The other one is "Protector" by Thomas...
Peer Pressure made me read the Hitchhiker (way back) and I enjoyed it propbably more the second time I read it (When I talk about the HHGTTG I only talk about the original Trilogy in 4 Parts. Mostly Harmless does not count).
My gripe with it was (and still is) that it absolutely, positively...
Just found this thread. I somehow found mention of Robert Stanek's Elf Queen's Quest as read-worthy. I am however quite estranged by how little mention of him is to be found also, how seldom you come around his books. (Ebay=Nada). So what kind of Fantasy does he write and how come he doesn't...
I heard it hailed somewhere as the "Lord of the Rings of Science Fiction" and decided to gibe it a go. Read book one and got hooked once I got over the initial puzzlement of the opening. I read all four volumes as close to back-2-back as possible, considering I started when Vol 4 just got...
:-D
That's it. BTW, slightly offtopic: Does anyone like (like me) "Dennis Miller Rants" (I think it's also available as book(s); I own one CD,treasure it...
"Now I don't want to get off on a rant here, but..."
Classic material.
Just have ti get this off my chest. I really, positively HATE when reknowned (at least in their genre of writing) authors give away their name in order to help some sub-standard writers publish their copy-cat work in order to make themselves some more money.
Don't know what I mean? How about...
I remember (at a fairly young age) getting hold of "When Eight Bells Toll" by Alistair MacLean. And of being absolutely mesmerized by the opening of the book.
The first few sentences where the protagonist just made my day.
Can you give more examples where the first couple of sentences...
I think with me it's about the same. I read everything I could get my hands on, of ourse all the classic Astrid Lindgren childrens books (are they well known to you in the UK and US, I wonder?).
Also I remember distinctly a crime-series for kids on a danish detective (Kim) and his friends. So...
While perusing my bookshelves I found out once again, that I am badly in need of some good (and lasting) recommendations concerning the Technothriller/Military thriller genre.
I LIKE (and own)
- All Clancy Novels
- All Larry Bond Novels (is he still writing???)
- The likes of Michael...
Glenn Meade goes quite well for an adventurous thrill-read. Definitely more my cup of tea than Robert Harris.
Also, you might want to check out Victor O'reilly (just three thrillers but quite fascinating)

Another vote for Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion. While the first seems to be rather slow, the second completes the story that has been laid out in the first and contains some more "actioN".
Anyway. Great Space Opera with interesting concepts. I also have Endymion/Rise of Endymion but haven't...
Very intersting subject I must say.
Now, I can understand the hatred for unnecessary Multi-Volumes (must not be trilogies must they?) that lead the reader to believe there is only money to be gained. Then again, as was mentioned with LOTR: WHO decides the publishing format? Iwould think more...
Not from the top of my head. As far as I remember it wasn't really a sentence that ticked me off, but his very slowing style. Example:
He made even the Bomber Raid (WWII) on London so unexceptionally boring and mindnumbing that I just couldn't go on any further. Granted: The above mentioned...
While travelling round Ireland (not with a fridge, mind you) last year, I found "McCarthy's Bar" in a bookstore and immediately decided to buy it.
I found Pete McCarthy's book makes for an excellent read, highly amusing, never boring, and very accurately describing parts of Ireland where I...
