Okay, confession here. I don't read romance novels, but I loved this one - The Mummy by Anne Rice. Vampires? No. But once you get into it you'll understand why a couple of us posted it here.
I am still waiting for the sequel Rice promised!

There are a lot of personal book lists on the Internet. Try a Google or Yahoo search using your favorite genre as the search term. You are bound to come up with tons of ideas from whatever hits you come up with.

What you described in your OP was a power play. You are dealing with an individual in a position of little power who asserts any power he has in any way he can. You were just the latest victim of his sh*tty attitude.
I don't read fan fiction, but I understand that it fulfills a need for some people. I don't have an issue with it since it provides a fantasy outlet for the lonely.
I found it interesting. Quite a bit of the Balkan history is accurate. The people there are still very superstitious.
I think that whole region is underrepresented in fiction.
I am surprised to hear that anyone would find Girl With a Pearl Earring boring, but then I remember that everyone has different tastes. Chevalier's novels are, like Anita Brookner's, intellectually and emotionally demanding.
Some people prefer not to make the effort. IMHO, it is their loss.
