Another question Jochem asked was "In the last century we've seen new waves of PI writers, first influenced by Hammett, then Chandler, Macdonald, Parker, later Lehane. Who do you think will influence the coming generation?"
That's a particularly hard question to answer. Writers may claim a...
 Recently did an interview about my Rachel Cord mysteries with Dutch writer Jochem Vandersteen for his blogsite SONS OF SPADE. Interview went live yesterday. :)

One of the questions he asked was, "What's your idea about the...
Private investigator Rachel Cord was created by a desire for a modern-day Cyrano de Bergerac willing to stride through Raymond Chandler's mean streets -- with attitude and panache -- taking on any odds. She plays fair while exposing her innermost thoughts, desires, accomplishments and mistakes...
An excerpt from Rachel Cord PI and the 'Bad Bitch Blues':
Something angered Jean Watson. You could see it in her set jaw, tight lips, the concentration she gave her computer screen, the way she attacked the keyboard. I was pretty certain that something was me.
Not that irritating her was my...
It appears that we are all in pretty much agreement. And I for one, would never deny anyone their religious/moral beliefs, and therefore would not expect -- nor force -- any clergy (of whatever faith) to sanction a marriage against his or her faith. But as I stated earlier, in this country...
It seems to me that 90% of the arguments FOR gay marriage are based upon equality and nondiscrimination, and that 90% of the arguments AGAINST gay marriage are religion-based and want to discriminate against a particular group.
How does my marriage, or anyone's marriage, affect someone else's...
Dare to cross the River Styx and descend into Hell with hard-boiled and edgy PI Rachel Cord. Noir, hard-boiled, detective fiction.
“Life isn’t all hearts and flowers. It’s pain and suffering too. It’s dirty little secrets buried in the muck and mire where the grubs and worms feed. Secrets I...
As you can't set the price lower than $10.28, I would actually raise it to $10.95. Book buyers are used to retail prices ending in either ".95" or ".99" and I don't think 45 or 50 cents would make that much difference to potential buyers.
And Peder has a good point about a Kindle edition. If...
Hardback or Trade paperback? Are you selling strictly through Amazon.com or are you trying to get into bookstores also and need to offer a trade discount? What's your cost per book and what's the minimum royalty (profit per book) that you're willing to accept? All of these questions and more...
Kathy,
Tried to send you a private message but Book & Reader said that your private message storage space was too full. Please drop me a line at reconary@fastermac.net. Thanks.
The articles at Making Light (nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/2010_07.html) were enlightening and I agree with Teresa that the site most likely compares vocabulary.
"I Write Like" is a laughable scam, but only a scam if we take it seriously. Even though "I Write Like" claims I write...
I've not read either Goddard nor French. I've seen them both mentioned when I've glanced in at the Café. Will have to see what my library has to offer.
I'm usually still up around midnight (reading) and taking a last look on the internet. I recently finished Patricia Cornwall's JACK THE RIPPER...
December,
Hopefully you've gotten well beyond those four rough draft chapters and have reached--or are nearing--the end. You can get some solid advice from author R.J.Pineiro here at the "Three Key Steps to Getting Published" thread. Pineiro has a long list of published books available at...
One cannot repeat Heinlein's advice often enough. Memorize it. Live it.
Add this bit of wisdom from President Calvin Coolidge:
"Nothing in the world can take the place of perseverance.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded...

The quickest and cheapest (Free) route to self-publishing is create an ebook at Smashwords or Kindle. It's also the best way I know to market to actual readers.
I recommend reading Are You Still Submitting Your Work to a Traditional Publisher? by Edward C. Patterson. It's a must read. The ebook...
