    Bernard Cornwell: The Winter King

I think I tried reading this, but gave up on it. It was my first (and only) Bernard Cornwell book, and I just felt it got bogged down with too much detail about the various battles.

What to do with these books?

I liked A Time To Kill, but the rest I would give away. Of course, it entirely depends on what you are into. A lot of them seem to be thrillers and espionage type books. If you enjoy that, then you should keep them.

What ticks you off when reading a book/story?

That's just what I was going to say. I read something recently, and the author said several times, something along the lines of: "She shivered, but it wasn't from the cold". I think the author (can't remember who, or the book) was so impressed with this phrase, he/she just felt...

Jared Diamond: Guns, Germs, and Steel

^Ooooh-la-la! I better get cracking then! I've actually started The Rise and Fall of The Third Chimpanzee again, and it is such a mind-blowing, educating read. I can't believe how much information is covered, and I'm only up to Chapter 4. I'll definitely be reading his other books; if...

    are you into audio books?

No, but I've never really tried them. I have listened to university lectures on tape, and I find my mind just wanders. I think it would be the same with audio books. I need to be physically reading and turning the pages for it to sink in, I think.

John Banville: The Book Of Evidence

I've added this one to my TBR pile, as I've heard nothing but good things about it. Thanks for the review, Sybarite. :)

Best book you've read so far in 2008

Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl. It was such an original read, and the best I've read in a long time.

    Libraries vs book stores

I prefer libraries - cheaper, and I don't get irritated if I borrow something I don't like. I do still buy the occasional book, usually if it's part of a series I'm collecting, or an author that I like.

    Renting books-paperspine.com

It seems quite expensive to me: $20 a month, even if it is for unlimited books. I guess if you don't have any decent libraries near you, then it's the only option. I have quite a few libraries close by (four of which I'm a member of), so I can pretty much find what I'm looking for. :)

    how long

I've finally finished Six Feet Over; at 270 odd pages in took me over 2 weeks to finish it. Dismal. I just found it hard to stay motivated, but a good book I can fly through in a couple of days.

    King Vs Koontz

The only Koontz book I enjoyed is Watchers. I have struggled through so many of his others, only to give up on the majority of them. Now I don't even bother. Not only is Stephen King a better writer, he is also a better storyteller. Koontz's books are full of sweet little moralistic...

Stephen Chbosky: The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

Well, I thought it was just ok. Nothing as brilliant as I was expecting, given how people rave about it all the time. It wouldn't hurt to try it; maybe you could borrow it off your sister?

I'd rather read Dan Brown than Matthew Reilly. :p

    W___ In The W___D Does This M___

Hmm, that's something I've always wondered about too.

    e-books vs physical books

I prefer physical books, though I do have several hundred e-books waiting to be read. I love that I can store so many books on my computer, but reading an e-book just isn't as enjoyable as a paper book.

    Average book length?

Probably between 300 and 400 pages.

What do you use as a bookmark?

I have to have a wide bookmark, as I find it very hard to read without underline the line I'm on (and hiding the other lines below it). :o I bought a hookmark off ebay a while ago, and I can't use it, simply because it's too thin. It's silly, but I just can't read unless the other lines below...

    How often do you read?

I try to read everyday, but I do struggle on workdays. When I get home, I'm usually so tired (and my eyes are strained from staring at the computer all day), that I find it hard to concentrate. Weekends are much better for me. Of course, if it's a very good book that I can't put down, then I...

    a book in the bin?

I've never thrown a book away, except when it was damaged. If it's something I don't like, then I stick it back on the shelf (if I intend to read it later) or give it to a friend.

Should we have a reference/school section?

I think with study guides and school texts there would be too much variety, and too little discussion, given that there are so many different subjects people are studying. I'm studying accounting, and I can't see myself posting threads about that; I use an accounting board for that. Perhaps...
