The only time I have found footnotes distracting was in House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. They went on and on, in some cases for another page, and off on a tangent. I found it very hard to follow the footnotes, and then jump back to the main story. The footnotes were very frequent, if I...
It's quite a quick read, so you shouldn't have too many problems with it. But as SFG75 says, there's another thread on it, which should have more info. :)
I tend to shuffle about a lot when I read, but generally the most comfortable position for me is lying on the sofa on my right side. Any other position, and I tend to keep moving about.
I personally loved The Stand, but I wouldn't call it a great piece of literature. I just think it's a great book. To each their own.
I haven't had a chance to read the previous posts for post-apocalyptic books, but I'm sure The Handmaid's Tale and Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood have been...
I've read a couple of e-books; I do prefer the paper book though - just the feel of it in my hands is much better than my Palm Pilot. The thing I like about e-book readers is that you can carry several favourites around with you in one small package. Also, you can insert notes/bookmarks into...
I'm living in a tiny basement flat at the moment, so I don't have much room for books. Hence, I've been borrowing rather than buying, for the most part. When hubby and I move (and hopefully it will be quite soon), we already have plans for how to organise our books (well, my books - he isn't a...
Wow, Stewart, that's a lot of books there! :D
I didn't know Mark Z. Danielewski had another book out (I'd only heard of House of Leaves)! I see you have the His Dark Materials trilogy too. That's a book that keeps popping up lately, and one that I'm determined to read sooner rather than later.
Great purchase. ;)
Yesterday I popped into the second hand bookstore and came out with:
Cosmic Dispatches - Edited by John Noble Wilford. Basically it's a collection of articles on astronomy and cosmology that appeared in The New York Times.
The Other Boleyn Girl - Phillipa Gregory...
I'm not particularly into fantasy either, though I have been considering giving The Gormenghast Trilogy a go. It's supposed to be a pretty dense book, so I think I'll have to wait until I'm in the mood for it.
Books I am planning to read:
Catch-22
A Clockwork Orange
Gone With the Wind
Gravity's Rainbow
The Great Gatsby
I, Claudius
Lolita
Midnight's Children
Neuromancer
On the Road
Ubik
White Noise
White Teeth
Books I have read:
Animal Farm - read it years...
The Lord of the Rings. I just cannot, cannot, cannot get into it. It's one of those books that I do plan to try to read again, but every time I pick it up, I end up putting it down shortly thereafter.
Probably 1 - 2am, but that's only because I'm not working. When I'm working, I make sure I'm in bed by midnight, otherwise I'll seriously regret it in the morning.
These days I prefer to borrow from the library, rather than buy. However, I still love to browse bookstores. I just love the look and smell of new books. :D It also gives me a chance to look at the new releases and highly recommended sections for some books to add to my TBR stack. ;)
The Demon by Hubert Selby, Jnr. It's a very disturbing account of a man's descent into insanity, with a pretty brutal climax. I read it years ago, and have forgotten the details; I'd love to re-read it, and see if it has the same 'shock impact'.
Yep - same here. I too have tapered off his books though. I used to buy the hardcovers as soon as they came out, but now I just borrow them from the library when I get around to it.
When I was a child, my most read author would have to be Enid Blyton. Loved The Famous Five series...
I usually use the free bookmarks I pick up from the library or bookstores. I used to buy bookmarks, but I found that I would either lose them or wear them out. :D I have to use some kind of 'proper' bookmark though - I can't just use a slip of paper. That would bug me. :p Don't ask me why...
