    Recommend me a book, thankyou!

I've heard plenty good things about Cryptonomicon, but I just keep putting off reading it. :whistling: It just seems so long and heavy. I like a good long book, but I find it quite hard to get through the ones that are very heavy-reading.

    Matthew Pearl: The Poe Shadow

I gave up on The Poe Shadow earlier this year. I thought it started brilliantly, and had me hooked, but it just started to drag. It's like there wasn't enough happening to keep the story moving forwards, and in the end I had to put it down.

    Stephen King/Richard Bachman: Blaze

I wasn't that impressed with Blaze; I just felt like it was too much like Of Mice and Men, and wasn't really original in any way.

    Margaret Atwood: Oryx And Crake

It's been a few years since I read Oryx and Crake, and I don't recall being all that blown away by it. I do remember being surprised by the ending, though. Then again, I wasn't a huge fan of The Handmaid's Tale, which is sort of seen as in the same vein. AquaBlue, can I recommend Alias Grace...

Gabriel García Márquez: Chronicle Of A Death Foretold

Great review, Sybarite. It sounds like an interesting read.

I've just finished watching that same game. ;)

Books everybody has read except you

Same here. I'll read (or at least try to) pretty much anything, whether it has been over-hyped or not. It's just a matter of having the time to get around to them. I tried Lord of the Rings, because of how much I had heard about it, but just couldn't get into it (loved the movies, though)...

    V.C. Andrews

Yup, that's the one. That's the only series I read of hers.

The first sentence in the book you're reading

'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.' - Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

    Tim Winton

I've not read him, but my former boss bought me Cloudstreet a few years ago, as she highly recommended him. One day, when I work through my TBR pile, I shall get to him. :)

    Anne Perry

    ^Hmm, maybe I'll give her a go.

    Anne Perry

Never tried her. The only thing I know about her is from Heavenly Creatures. There's something eerie about a convicted murderer writing crime novels. Still, I guess it's best she writes about something she knows. :whistling:

    Does spelling still count?

This is one that bugs me as well. I think it is down to the pronounciation of it. When people speak quickly, "I wouldn't have done so" sounds a lot like "I wouldn't of done so". I misspelt 'definitely' for years. I'd always thought it was 'definately'. Was mighty surprised when I...

    Litany, those are gorgeous! :)

To read or not to read. That is the question.

I hate giving up on a book, but sometimes it just has to be done. I rarely give up in the first few chapters, unless I know I'm not in the mood for it. I usually give up around a quarter to halfway (or sometimes right towards the end) through, if I just know I can't finish it. Even then, I tend...

Where are you? (in the book you are reading) - please read 1st post

I'm in an old asylum, with a whole bunch of blind people. Us women have just had to go and service a bunch of men, to get food for our lot.
