I was surprised to find out this book didn’t already have a thread.
Everyone’s familiar with this one even though you may not have read the book. Dr. Frankenstein finds the key to creating life (reanimating a dead body). He successfully brings life to a man. The hideous deformity and scars...
Some good points Champagne. If a scientific theory is put forward, no one has any issues about challenging it, it's even expected, but religions get a free ride.
The problem is, how do you go from our current society to a secular one without millions of people dying.
Like everyone else I think marijuana should be legalized and taxed. Mushrooms too while we're on the subject. If it's naturally found in nature, how can you make it illegal.
Coke, heroin or any other synthetic drug should still be illegal.
People can believe what they want to believe. I have no problem with that as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone, but when these religious beliefs are believed by our politicians and leaders, I definitely have a problem with that.
Policies in the 21st century shouldn’t be influenced based on an...
I’m 38 and started reading with a sense of urgency when my son was born 4 years ago. I’ve had a list of books-to-read-before-I-die, but never really focused on getting through it until then he was born. Now I dedicate about an hour a day to reading.
I’m not even through Genesis, and already there are examples of incest, forced sexual slavery, regular slavery, rape, falsely accused rape, polygamy and murder. Not to mention the indignant treatment of women.

I say this knowing that in Canada we have a lot of rules regarding the humane treatment of animals...
This is the year I tackle the bible (New and Old Testament). I’m starting the Old Testament this week. I can’t wait for the first Jehovah’s to come to my door when I’m done. I might even invite them in.
I read these 4 books and I thought that was a lot. Some of you must read day and night.
Playing for Pizza-J. Grisham
Cross Bones-K. Reichs
Frankenstein-M. Shelley
The Children of Hurin-Tolkien
1) One Book that made you read it More Than Once: Lord of the Rings-J. Tolkien
2) One book you would want on a desert island: The survival guide that Sparkchaser mentioned.
3) One book that made you laugh: The Dilbert Principle
4) One book that made you cry: None
5) One book that...
Anyone read this book? Kathy Reichs is Canadian, but lives in both Montreal and North Carolina (I think). The series 'Bones' is based on the characters in her books.
In this story a Jewish man that ends up dead. Turns out he was also involved in selling illegal religous artifacts. In this...
I just hope there ARE years to come. According to Harris' book it's only a matter of time before a group of fanatics get a hold of a nuclear weapon and use it.
I read 'The End of Faith' by Sam Harris.
If you're a strong believer in religion, it'll make you question your faith.
If you're a questionable believer, you'll be turned into an atheist.
If you're an atheist, you'll realize you've been right all this time.
