Sigh. Yeah, a books difficulty is based on the readers capacity. Not really the issue though is it? There are illiterates who would find Goodnight Moon challenging. Maybe it was one of the 500 eyez0me couldn't finish? I was hoping to encourage discussion on works that were truly hard...
True, then it evolved into a decent discussion on actual difficult works. If its path is to regress into books that are challenging because of dryness or the limit of the readers capacity then I'll stay out of the thread.
I thought the purpose of the thread was to discuss books that are 'hard' because of a non-traditional style, esoteric content or the work is particularly dense. I too found LOTR 'hard' but not because the subject matter was difficult. It was just so bloody dry and over-written.
No, it's rude to do here. Unless it's a picture thread it's poor manners to be posting pictures. If you really have to share which edition was bought include an ISBN or a link.
It's hard. Not to be glib but that's mostly what I'm getting out of it at the moment. I've got a guide I found online printed out assisting me. Plot wise I'm doing alright but without the guide I'd be missing the subtext. It's baffling, beautiful, staggering, dense and frustrating. I do...
Should be just over 40 this year. An average of 391 pages per book. I've beat last year by at least ten books. Read better books this year too. The books I have planned for next year are mostly long dense works so numbers will drop but quality of books will increase.
I have a spreadsheet with two pages. Read and Unread. I don't keep the unread page so up to date, I try to add books as I buy them but it doesn't always happen. Whether they get added to the spreadsheet or not they end up on a shelf or in a pile. The Unread page is in alphabetical order, not...
I'm in disagreement with most but I found Never Let Me Go to be a predictable bore. Beautiful prose though. A Clockwork Orange though is gorgeous. One of those must reads.
I recommend grabbing yourself a copy of the nadsat dictionary. They can be found online easily.
Come and get one in the yarbles! If ye have any yarbles!
In my experience this forum does not have a lot of non-fiction fans. Particularly in the self-help & business genres. Mostly a fiction crowd around here. There are of course exceptions.
Have you tried Gladwell's books? *blink and The Tipping Point? What about The Long Tail by Chris...
I am half-way through Ulysses. It's quite difficult. I bought The Crying of Lot 49, Gravity's Rainbow and Infinite Jest all very recently. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski is on my Christmas list. Ready to get my 'hard' on.
