True, but I've seen it in a couple books recently. Other than Jose's I can't remember which though. Joyce didn't use them but at least he hyphenated. Damn, I can't remember any other examples.
I thought a Pulitzer Prize winning piece of non-fiction deserved it's own thread and hopefully my search was correct when it said there isn't currently one. Diamond has also written a few other books including 2 I plan on reading if I enjoy Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Third Chimpanzee and...
I did indeed finish A Game of Thrones and have picked up the next book in the series, A Clash of Kings. I hesitated before I did buy the second book because I kinda felt like I had read A Game of Thrones before. Kings and Lords squabbling over iron chairs. It is typical fantasy...
Went to a Maple Syrup Festival in Powasson ON this past weekend. The town church was having a basement sale on used books. $5 for as many as you can fit in a grocery bag. This is my yield:
Hardcover 1st Edition of Chesapeake by James A. Michener.
Hardcover 1st Edition of Journey by James...
While not a perfect indication of a good book looking at the books that are shorlisted for, or win, the major literary awards is not a bad place to start. The Pulitzer Prize, Booker Prize, Nobel Prize and the Giller Awards - A Canadian Literature prize is not a bad place to start. I'm Canadian...
Check out Farley Mowat. Never Cry Wolf is a great start. James A. Michener also has a few books that could be considered nature literature. Alaska & Journey spring to mind.

I may finish A Game of Thrones today. I've bought A Clash of Kings so I guess I am going to continue the series. I'm hoping I hear more about the fancy area beyond the Wall and less about Lords arguing about seats.
Current NYT Bestseller Lists in fiction on April 19, 2006.
I've only read one, Angels & Demons, and none are on my list of books to be read. Yes, Bestsellers are often crap.
Hmmm Dune. I greatly enjoyed that until the ending. So little happened for so long then there was a massive amount crammed into a short ending. I keep forgetting I read that and I only read it in February of this year. I certainly have no interest in reading the rest of the Dune books.
One could do much worse with a 700th post than recommending Oryx and Crake! I only managed to get through around thirty novels last year, although some were quite long, and Oryx and Crake was one of my favourites. Easily top five. Great concept with brilliant execution.
