I know what you're experiencing here, because I've been through the same thing on the hardware forum I used to be a Mod for. If a conversation is going off-topic and you or antoher Mod steps in with an on-topic reply, the banter will immediately stop -- kinda like the kids gettin' caught with...
Ron suggested clearing out your internet temp files and cookies. He's thinkin' maybe a bad cached page, probably java related. Clean house, reboot, and see what happens (providing the reboot alone doesn't fix your problem.)
You might check for spyware. Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and do a virus scan. This will show you if you've got stuff on your system you shouldn't. If that doesn't stop IE from messin' up, holler, and I'll get more suggestions from hubby (he's a PC tech :D )
