I love that poem, and I'm sure it's about forsythia. We had a big bush next to our house when I was growing up. It was gold before it was green. The gold was for a very short time, while the green lasted all summer through all the heat and humidity.
Not being autistic, I can't judge the books accuracy, but I was very impressed the the author's ability to take me into the mind of someone who thinks very differently from most of us. Very literal, very specific. He gives an example something like this.
Most people say they see cows in a...
This and some other forums are very good for tuning out the world and its inconvenient demands. I have a strong character -- I limit myself to twice a day.
Not a missionary effort! One of the things I liked about the book was Mortensen's open views to other religions. At one point he went to the mosque with one of his Pakistani friends and afterwards asked him to teach him how to pray properly (in their style).
He did work against extremist...
The Consolations of Philosophy by Alain de Botton. He describes the views of six philosophers (Socrates, Epicurus, Seneca, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Montaigne) in terms of how their views can console you for various problems, such as unpopularity (Socrates) or lack of money (Epircurus). I...
I hope not. Occasionally it would be good to have the book downloaded quickly, but not usually. I enjoy the process of reading too much to want to skip it. An "instant book" would be like instant sex, inescapable sometimes, but not as much fun as the complete process.
I have a blog here (Silver Threads) and if it keeps me out of office, some good will have come of it.
I keep a hand-written list of my reading each month in my purse, for convenience. But suppose I lose my list? I decided to transfer the lists to a blog, starting with January 2007. Now and...
I like Ishiguro including Never Let Me Go, a book which some people dislike intensely. The only one so far that didn't work for me as When We Were Orphans. I thought he went overboard and never made his character believable.
You are not too late for June. The book is A Farewell to Arms by Hemingway and we haven't started discussing it yet. Don't hesitate to post about the book as you read it. The book is set during World War I and I promise that there are no bull fights in it.
We are still getting the system...
Silver Season is my business name from my mail order silverplate business of 25 years ago. Now I use is on the internet - usually no space, no caps - when I need an Id.
And how about The First Circle, our current book of the month? It is certainly a dystopia if it is an expression of the rationale of dialectical materialism carried to extremes. As one of the characters explains, any injustice they are suffering is a result of the inevitability of the historical...
Two books I have enjoyed in which music was very important are An Equal Music by Vikram Seth and The Fountain Overflows by Rebecca West. The West book, especially, is all about a family in which music helps to define the various members of the family.
I joined Bookmooch about 6 months ago and have already exchanged over 60 books. Now, whenever I think of a book I might like to read - or need a Book of the Month here - or a book for one of my book groups - I check its availability on Bookmooch.
No bad transactions so far, although some...
