    Old Sci-Fi books

Not at all Not at all, especially when the books deal with social issues and the way people react. Two of my all-time favorites are Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and Philip Wylie's When Worlds Collide. Anyone who hasn't read them should give them a try.

    Henry David Thoreau

You should read Thoreau because he writes good tough prose and makes you think. I wish all school kids did read Walden, but many are not capable of it and some school districts find him dangerous. Thoreau was a strong individualist. If 99 citizens obey a law and one individual believes that...

    Library

For me, a library is a friendly place, going all the way back to childhood. We had many books at home, but the library had even more. The only disappointment was that - under a certain age - I wasn't allowed to visit certain shelves. Now that magazines are so expensive, sometimes I stop in...

    Songs Stuck In Your Head

Pavarotti Opera arias are dangerous for me. When Pavarotti died, they kept playing his Nessun Dorma (sp?) on TV and it lodged itself in my frontal lobes. Good listening, though.

    So, what happened?

Me too I really missed you. That other site was really nasty - the only way out was to leave the internet entirely.

What do you use as a bookmark?

Don't buy book marks I use book marks and have a good variety, but I never buy them. (Well, once I did. I bought an Emily Bronte bookmark when I visited the Bronte home in Haworth, but then I didn't use it because it was so perfect.) I collect book marks as I visit the usual haunts of...

Looking for an autobiography to read

Perhaps Memoir? There is a lot of overlap between autobiography and memoir. I recommend Russell Baker's Growing Up. He also wrote a second book (don't remember the title) which continues the story.

    Crime or forensic fiction wanted

Scott Turow I'm curious why Scott Turow is not mentioned here or listed in the Forensics Mysteries list. I enjoy his books very much. They are a "sort of" series, as some of the same characters turn up in more than one book and the locale stays the same.

    Do You Own a Gun(s)?

Me too I do not own a gun. I would not own a gun, but if I had one for hunting I would keep it locked up at all other times. When my children were young, I did not even let them have toy guns. They were, however, permitted to point their fingers at each other and say "Bang! Bang!" No...

    Last seen...

The Gold Rush The Gold Rush - Charlie Chaplin via DVD. When you see how he moves, for example in the scenes where he is blown into and through the cabin, you realize what a great dancer he could have been. The plot is hokey and obvious, but the film is wonderful. The DVD included some...

    Do people judge you?

For me a book can be heavy is two different ways. The first is sheer poundage. When the book is difficult to drag around and dangerous if you drop it on your foot, it is heavy. Other heavy books require concentration and a will to continue, but reward the effort. Is it "fun" to sweat on...

    Your reading routine

I replaced my ugly burnt orange recliner with an ugly brown recliner. The color makes no difference while I'm reading and I need to have my feet up. A cup of rapidly cooling coffee is good too.

Flying soon? Watch what you read.

Under Cover What we need is some sort of deceptive book cover to put on our books. Something with an American flag or "I love George Bush" in big red letters. Some of us used to do that in junior high school - not "I love George Bush" but a plain brown cover on books that might interest...

The Best Book You've Ever Read?

Best book for a trip How will you travel? My method for choosing travel books is to seriously consider suitcase space. I never take hardcover books of any value or any book that I treasure and would hate to lose. (I lose things on trips.) For me, the best is a stack of slighly battered...

    Books about Gandhi

Mohandas Gandhi is on my mind because I have recently been preparing for a course centered on his life and times. I am finding that the books I am using fall into several categories. 1. Books by Gandhi himself, like his autobiography and his book about health practices. 2. General books...

    Blunkett criticises pond officers

Neither you nor I were there so can hardly judge the situation. The mother is understandably upset and is giving us her first "automatic" reaction. Besides, she may feel a bit guilty. Why wasn't she watching these kids?

The Most overrated fiction book ever?

Another Country I nominate Another Country by James Baldwin. I had to read it for a college course at a time when everyone was very impressed by Baldwin. Some of his other stuff is ok but this is poor fiction. Wooden, interchangeable characters, especially unbelievable women. Important Theme...

Most hated 'classic' novel you've actually read

Limited James Portrait of a Lady held my interest, as did Washington Square. I have started several other James novels, only to give up in despair. Would anything ever happen! I took college English courses at a time when James was in high esteem and was told that The Ambassadors was the...

    Richard Dawkins: The God Delusion

No answer My answer won't change anything because my answer is not only that I don't know but that I can't know. So both yes and no are equally valid and equally meaningless. I don't know/can't know what I am saying yes to or what I am saying no to.
