We thought about doing something for Pi day. :) Instead, we had churros. But we did wish friends a "Happy Pi Day!" and discuss the use of pi with each other and our children.
Same.
I always thought Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, and Washington DC....but have been hearing that Mount Rushmore is kind of a "let-down"....
Mount Rushmore - cool to see in person, or not worth the journey?
Oh. That makes more sense. :) It has been a VERY long time since I read To Kill a Mockingbird and that instance of "Boo" was so far from my mind that it didn't even occur to me. May need a re-read..... ;)
Hi, MikeyG! Could it have been Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series or her prequel series, The Infernal Devices? Infernal Devices are definitely steampunk and fantasy.
You're welcome!
I also just thought of Julie of the Wolves. And have you looked at the I Survived series? The books are all based on historical events, though I have no knowledge of whether there may be juvenile romantic attachments.
Miss Spitfire: Reaching Helen Keller by Sarah Miller
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - I haven't read this, but don't get the impression it has anything romantic and I think it's purely science fiction and not magic. Does anyone know?
Hi, ELF88! It has been a while since I've read anything without any of those elements, but I think these will work.
Other members, let me know if I'm right!
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell
The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare
.....I guess...
Definitely train....I think. Just seems more comfortable and you're able to move around more. And they usually have bed cars. I tried an overnight trip on a bus once. I already have issues with sleeping upright, got an ear infection, tried lying on the floor....hated the experience. lol...
Yes, that's the same series. I remember the 3rd book not feeling as compelling for me, but it was also about a fully grown woman, and I was maybe 12 or 13. I just remember it didn't seem like there was much going on in the story, so I think I didn't get very far.
#4 was published in 1990, so...
Hi, Nebs! I didn't get beyond the 3rd in the Earth's Children series - I don't think the others were written yet when I read them! - but definitely loved them. I haven't read any other pre-historic based books, but found this list you might find helpful on HistoricalNovels.info: Novels Set in...
I haven't yet developed a fondness for the bivalve type of shellfish, but if you're talking scallops, shrimp, crab, or lobster, I love them pretty much any way they're prepared. In pasta, salad, Thai soup, burritos, Cajun food, all alone. I probably like them best warm with butter and lemon...
Maybe New York - I love that there are so many things to do and such a great mixture of natural and urban settings.
Have you ever visited the High Line in New York?
(The children's book, The Curious Garden, was inspired by it)
Raspunsul, in case you really are still wondering, "Original Poster" or "OP" refers to the original (or "first") person to post the question or statement in a thread or conversation.
