Elect to Read a Banned Book
Throughout the country, most children are starting a new academic year. Teachers are sending out their lists of required readings, and parents are beginning to gather books. In some cases, classics...
A Report's Life - Walter Cronkite
The Greedy Bastard Diary - Eric Idol (of Month Python Fame)
Living Faith - Jimmy Carter
The Woman with the Alabaster Jar - Margaret Starbird
The Gnostic Gospels - Elaine Pagels
My small and timid approach to the non fiction theme that's been brewing around here.
Oh God, I know. I could never part with a book I've enjoyed. I just love to look at them all lined up like beautiful little soldiers on my shelves. I respect those having the control to be able to share, give, or sell books for others to enjoy but I just can't do it.
At the bookstore I have two MO's.
1. I know what I want and go to the sections that are alphabetical by author and find it. If I do not know the author I'll ask for help.
2. Browsing. First I stop at the coffee bar and get a coffee. :) Then I do a few things... I'll look at all...
I don't mind that I have a TBR pile, it's just that I wish it would stay at a steady number; read 4, buy 4, and so on. Lately it's been read 1, buy 4. :p I can't stop....
Why do we do this? It's not logical at all. I mean it's not like the bookstore is going to run out of books and we won't be able to get anymore. It's almost hoarding.
Well I'm just back now from a bit of housekeeping and I decided to at least to move all the books into one location. I've got them all lined up against one wall now. Seems more manageable if I can at least see them all. When they're spread all over I feel like it's very possible I'll never...
by my TBR pile! Well okay it's actually several piles. I have so many books scattered and piled that I'm beginning to lose track of them.
With the understanding that books will always jockey for position near the top of the pile how do you guys keep some order? Is there a point where you...
Sigh....... Just finished Garp. What a great book. Irving can create a character like no other author I've read. Each is so flawed, idiosyncratic, human, and believable. Irving's characters seem to truly "live" in the world he creates for them. Often, I find, authors will create a...
I'm also woefully lacking in Atwood. I read, and loved Handmaiden's Tale, but the only other thing by her I've read is a collection of short stories.
She's somewhere in this huge pile of books over here......
The Attack - Yasmina Khadra
Picked this one up on impulse, and I'm pretty excited to read it. Has anyone read it?
I just put it on the top of the TTBR (that's the Towering To Be Read:D )
Khadra, the pseudonym of Mohammed Moulessehoul, an exiled Algerian writer celebrated for his...
The Legend of Wolf Song by George Stone. It's out of publication but you could probably track down a copy. Geared to a younger reader (say middle school or so) but a beautiful read nonetheless. The story is told from the wolves perspective.
I'm about 1/2 way into Garp right now and it certainly is classic Irving. Garp and Jenny are such great, characters. Despite their considerable flaws I can't help but love them both. I'll post more when I finish.
Whoops I'm way late this week. Here it is:
Cat’s Bloody Lip puts her in Intensive Care
Kitty was missing and her owners were worried. Thankfully she made her way home after just a couple of days. Her relieved owners shuttled her inside, glad to have her back. On her return they...
