Juliet Marillier's Sevenwaters trilogy is definately what you're looking for.
And if you want something more exotic Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy trilogy...
Across the Nightingale Floor has two sequels available, just in case you haven't read them.
Other reccomendations would be:
The Empire Trilogy - Raymond Fiest and Janny Wurts (better than anything either has written seperately)
Genpei - Kara Dalkey. It is based on Japanese folklore. It...
I haven't read Paladin of Souls yet, but I've read the prequel (Curse of Chalion). It was better than average, but not award material, so it'll be interesting reading PoS to see if there's a big improvement. Yes it is fantasy, by the way. It'll have to be damn good to beat Ilium which was fantastic.
Salem's Lot - King
At the Mountains of Madness - Lovecraft
Mr Clubb and Mr Chuff - Peter Straub
Those are the three scariest, the best horror book I've read though is probably Misery.
Why would you want to? ;)
Nice favourites list, I love them all as well. Have you read Jack Vance's Dying Earth series as well? If you like them I reccomend the works of Clark Ashton Smith. A Song of Ice and Fire and Malazan Book of the Fallen are two of the top (in my opinion) current fantasy...
Sorry, I really just haven't been in the mood for this type of book recently. I bought it and will read it at some point, but I've already had to put down two similar books and don't feel like starting this...
Alastair Reynolds has an excellent trilogy dealing with the Inhibator threat, plus one other book set in the same universe.
They are, in order, Revelation Space, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap. Chasm City is the stand-alone. These definately fit the epic space opera bill and they generally...
What you're definately looking for is the Kushiel's Legacy trilogy by Jacqueline Carey. It's a fantastic series beginning with Kushiel's Dart.... and plenty of sex too ;) Robb is actually pretty tame, at least, after Carey it is
None of them particularly stand out. I thought the Valar were pretty cool, but some Tolkein geek will doubtless point out that they're not really of Middle-Earth
The Book of the New Sun, the first series, is absolutely unique among fantasy/sci-fi literature. It's got a stunning secondary world, intricate puzzles of identity, numerous layers of mythological and religious metaphor and a dense, sophisticated prose style designed to make you read slowly and...
My two picks are:
(a) the first books in two of my favourite fantasy series.
(b) books that I think would generate a lot of discussion.
Here are plot summaries from amazon, but for me to describe what I like about them, in my opinion, defies the point of the idea. Tis about trying new...
