    Ask Me Anything ...

Why, when looking at the sun rising or setting, does it appear to be larger than at any other time?

    Robert Jordan: Wheel of Time

Ugh not you, not on another forum! There are bastions of spamlessness and fun left to me which you'll never find.

    Lois McMaster Bujold

Curse of Chalion is sitting on my shelve just waiting to be read.

SF book recommendations for me! :)

Found a little treasure today: well over 100 short stories by Arthur Clake in one volume, 1000 pages of pure goodness.

SF book recommendations for me! :)

Dune - Frank Herbert 1984 - George Orwell that's about it, between the two of you most of my SF favs were named. I would definately second all of igkuk's reccomendations.

    And then they all died

... But it's got talking mice... that makes it good. Right? RIGHT!?!

    And then they all died

Meh, a good book is a good book whether it's a stand alone or part of a series. The correct number of books in a series is one less than one too many. Simple. As to how they should end, in a way that gives the readers what they deserve for reading about how the characters came to be at that climax.

    R.Jordan: New Spring

Fans of the earlier WoT books will like it, but I thought it was his usual unoriginal drivel

    Please help!

Wasn't much pleasure in it for me. If you enjoyed Gene Wolfe's books then I believe you may be able to recognise Jordan, Brooks and Eddings for what they are: Uninspired talentless writers that write for money and no for enjoyment. Try other books from the Fantasy Masterworks series if you...

    Please help!

It's one of the most famous fantasy novels of all time, just in recent years it has been neglected slightly. I reccomend it to anyone.

Can someone recommend a good epic?

It's very unlikely Amazon will stick to that date, it's just a guess, no one really has any idea when it will be released. Martin hasn't finished writing it yet and he himself says he has no idea when he will.

    Reading in February

Here's a review I read a little while ago of the sequel: Let me start out by saying that Robert Newcomb's "The Gates of Dawn" is a stunning novel. Literally. After several hours, I blacked out from the migraine accrued while reading the book. The Gates of Dawn is Newcomb's second foray into...

Hard luck mate, worst book I've ever had the displeasure of reading. Absolutely terrible stuff. Disgrace that he ever got published.

The name of the series escapes me at the moment, but the first book is called the Bone Doll's Twin by Lyn Flewelling.

    King Arthur type books?

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley is the best King Arthur novel you can read. Simple.

    Books/Authors you hate

Did he actually do anything? He just said "You shall not pass" then "Fly, you fools" then he fell down a hole. Hardly a spectacular performance. And Tolkien didn't even have the bravery to leave him dead. :p

    Books/Authors you hate

Not to mention a book with nothing resembling a plot and characters that might as well be blocks of stone. Did Gandalf annoy anyone else? All he did was sit around and be wise. Some incinerating please...

    Books/Authors you hate

Oh, I completely forgot about someone the first time round... ...Tolkien. Can anyone say OVERRATED? Really, what's the big deal. I think the Silmarillion was a masterpiece, but Lord of the Rings sucked.

    Reading in February

Just finished: Darker Than You Think - Jack Williamson What can I say? I loved this novel. The 38th choice for the Fantasy Masterworks series is a derserved one (though it could be considered horror). Published in 1948 it still somehow seems very modern. It's set in the real world and despite...

Can someone recommend a good epic?

I would say the magic has been increasing steadily book by book. I'm sure by the end with Bran, Melisandre, the Others and dragons all running about things should be more magic-filled.
