The years(unlike this thread) have changed, but the problem is still the same. Add another two to the list:
Meltdown: A free-market look at why the stock market collapsed, the economy tanked, and how government bail outs will make things worse.; Thomas E. Woods
Will America grow up before...
I use to be more of a dedicated member, I'm more intermittent now due to a variety of reasons.....life being the largest reason.:D I do enjoy the threads that members post about books that you otherwise can't find on other forums. Not sure why, but this one has always clicked with me.
You would be proud abecedarian! I went to the library last night and checked out a Ben Carson book. I picked up Take the risk. While there is fascinating medical descriptions of separating conjoined people, the larger point about taking risks made the book a good one. I'm fifty pages into it...
a very timely pick given our book of the month selection for June.:) I have the lebowski zen related book on my kindle. I've never seen that movie, hope to some time when I have......well.....time.o_O
Thank you Meadow for clarifing things at the half-way point. To be honest, it kind of muddles and to me, I caught his drift, not his full point. Just a technicality, but I really dislike the term "quality." Not sure what I would replace it with, but just a minor thing that I'm hung up on at...
My comments in post #31 point out the concern you are alluding to. The point of the post is to highlight how classical rationalism and other truths have their own platform from which they operate. When you tend to operate on someone else's platform, I would argue you don't get much headway.
In posting this, I don't wish to enter the whole theism-atheism fray. I'm only pointing out that Dawkins and classical reasoning operates on a platform and asserting that others who attempt to reason on any other platform than their own, are doomed.
The Dawkins slaughter of Liberty...
A huge rift over "truth" and who possesses it rightfully appears to be coming out here. I don't believe anyone would discount the importance of science, but you wouldn't use the scientific method in order to decide to buy food that is "good" for you. Similarly, we can all agree that "good" art...
Meadow's comment reminds me of the observation that people in their "cage" cars look depressed. "Who is happy on monday morning?" gave me a good chuckle. Pirsig's comments about time was a subtle, but profound argument. The scene where a mechanic just bangs Pirsig's engine to pieces and...
In more of an accoustical mood as of late.
I love the "friends don't let friends get haircuts" on the guitar-dig on Metallica who was in the audience according to a few sources......
I have to say that I'm up to chapter 5 now and I'm probably done for the night. I did enjoy Pirsig's writing style and while motorcycles and other technical things are not my bag, the workings of engines and the associated concerns with motorcycles was fairly easy to understand and to picture...
