Newsweek ending print edition in 2013

My local paper has been on the verge of going out of print for a few years now. And yes it is sort of shocking to see Time and Newsweek going digital. To me it seems like a cultural progression to having everything you want in one place, anytime you want it. Computers (of all shapes and sizes)...

The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao - Junot Diaz :stars4: Entertaining, educational, well written story. Diaz has a unique voice that probably wouldn't appeal to everyone, but it did to me. Just picked up his new one.

Junot Diaz: The Brief And Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao

Sorry Peder! You might like it, some of the references are pretty universal, at least to people who read. I know for one, I would probably be getting a lot more out of the story if I could understand Spanish. It seems like about 1/4 of the book is in Spanish.

Junot Diaz: The Brief And Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao

I'm reading this now, and thoroughly enjoying it so far. I wish I had read it when it came out instead of after reading and hearing all sorts of hype about it. It sort of added some lofty expectations, but so far, solely based on entertainment value, it is living up to the hype. It's a well...

    Gay marriage

At the time of the Law was given, Israel was it's own nation and a theocracy to boot. Any Law that was given by God, they could uphold and enforce within their specific community. By the time of Jesus, Israel was a Roman holding. When Jewish law and Roman law contradicted each other, Roman law...

    Gay marriage

Paul affirmed in the New Testament that homosexual sex is sinful. He also affirmed that a whole lot of other things were sinful too. In our culture for some reason the homosexual thing gets a whole lot more press. Not sure why....

    Gay marriage

Just for the sake of clarity..... The things you are mentioning are Levitical laws that were given to the nation of Israel at it's formation. In the time of the New Testament, specifically when Gentiles were first entering in to the Church a split occurred. The majority of the people who...

Funny books are impossible to find or funny books don't like me

Oh yeah, if you haven't tried him you might like Tim Dorsey. Serial novels set in Florida. The "heroes" are a chronic drug addict and a serial killer who is also a Florida history buff. They travel through Florida and get into various adventures. Dorsey gets compared to Hiaasen a lot, but I...

    Gay marriage

Just so you know Bob, I didn't mean anything derogatory by that. I understand what you are saying. I just thought it was ironic is all. And I think you have a point. At least in this country it seems sometimes like Christians get targeted and even in some occasions their right to expression gets...

    Gay marriage

Does anyone else find it ironic that by defending the right of expression of the Catholic Church, Conscious Bob has become the "Devil's" advocate in this debate. As a Christian I have always been mystified by why some other Christians are so against gay marriage being legalized by a...

Do You Think Books Turned Into Movies Do It Justice?

As a long time fan and collector of comic books I am excited to see all of the movie adaptations. I would love to see some of the really great, but more obscure titles get their shot at the big screen. I do have to say that a lot of the movie adaptations have been sort of crappy. The Batman...
