How about Richard Flanagan's "The Narrow Road to The Deep North?"
It won the Booker and it seems a few people on forum have read it already, so we might actually be able to get a discussion going (laughs).
The Narrow Road was pretty darned good. I liked it a great deal. Had a few misgivings about some of the plot elements, but hey, you can't argue against the quality of the writing. Flanagan is pretty amazing.
Oh yeah! I am a pretty hardcore Diaz fan at this point. I thought This is How You Lose Her was superb. Drown, too, if you haven't already read it is pretty great. After reading those, along with Oscar, I have come to consider Diaz one of my absolute favorite contemporary authors. He really gets...
The Narrow Road To The Far North - Richard Flanagan :star3:
An inappropriate love affair + death and dismemberment on the infamous Burma Death Railway of WWII. Won this years Booker prize.
This was a great year for me Peder. I read some great stuff this year and it was actually difficult to pick favorites. I'm finishing the year out with this years Booker winner, The Narrow Road To The Deep North, by Richard Flanagan. It is pretty much excellent so far, so I might have to alter my...
Redeployment - Phil Klay :star3:1/2
2014 U.S. national book award winner. A collection of short stories involving the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, each told from the perspectives of different U.S. soldiers.
I liked it but did not think it was as good as Anthony Doer's novel which it...
A Rumor Of War - Phil Caputo :star3:
An unapologetic, unvarnished memoir of the author's experience as a U.S. Marine Second Lieutenant during the Vietnam War.
True dat. Regardless of their political affiliation they had to know they might get blown to bits.
I watched all the movies back to back about a year or two ago, and grudgingly, I have to say Revenge Of The Sith probably moved into second place for me, after Empire. And I grew up on the...
Man, I gotta believe the Rebels let everyone and their momma know that they blew up the Deathstar. If we have facebook, they're had to be some type of galactic social media... :D
Right on. I agree with almost all of that. You reminded me of what I did sort of like about Ifemelu: her observations as a non-American black person in America. Very entertaining indeed. The glaring social differences were interesting. I have always wondered how Africans feel about America, so...
Sharp Objects - Gillian Flynn :star4:
Big city reporter returns to her small town home to cover a child abduction. She soon finds herself part of a serial murder investigation and surrounded by one of the most creepily dysfunctional families ever. And that family is hers! Once again, i could not...
Let me say that even though I have come to appreciate Hemingway, I am not a huge fan of his writing style. It is too spare for me, but I think it suits the stories that he tells perfectly. Of his stories that I have read I think that is most true about The Old Man and The Sea. I like the theme...
