All The Light We Cannot See - Anthony Doerr
:star4:
"Really, Children, Mathematically all of light is invisible...."

Tenth of December - George Saunders :star3:1/2
I forgot about this one that I slipped in a few weeks ago....
Tenth of December is a collection of ten dark, sometimes dystopian, always tragi-comic short stories. If there is an underlying thread that draws these stories together, I might guess...
After a too long, unwanted break from books I started back with something pretty excellent. "All The Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr. Half way through and it is pretty marvelous.
It seems like it would be more puzzling from a broader viewpoint. The broader viewpoint might say : "Don't all of you believe basically the same thing? What's the problem?" Sort of the way people who don't understand Sunni vs Shiite differences, can't figure out why one muslim might kill...
I wish him luck. Denominational divisions and squabbling are one of the most puzzling aspects of modern Christianity. From your synopsis, it doesn't sound like he is shooting for a new branch of Christianity. It sounds like maybe a movement within all denominations to foster some acceptance of...
Oh! almost forgot. If you are looking for another one, you might try "The Murder Machine", by Gene Mustain. It is about an outfit of Mafia hitmen in the 1980's led by a guy named Roy DeMeo. It is retold from eye witness, informer testimony. Even Paul Castellano and John Gotti were nervous about...
Yeah, he was pretty sharp. I think any of them that make it to that level and not only stay alive, but are successful, have to be pretty intelligent, or at the very least extremely cunning. It is the stories and the dialogue that make or break these types of books. I remember from Brasco, the...
These look good! Have you read the original Donnie Brasco, by Pistone? The movie was so-so, but the book was full of all sorts of stories, details, and tons of hilarious real nicknames.
I will check out "The Last Godfather".
People who have real trust in their religious beliefs don't "fear" science. Most scientific discoveries tend to magnify the glory of God, not diminish it. Learning about our world, universe, life, etc., is faith building to people who have true faith. It is only when science requires us to have...
I googled John Brown out of curiosity and found that this book is being made into a movie starring Liev Schreiber as John Brown. Now if only they could get the Cohen Bros to direct....
The rollicking and hilarious account of Henry Shackleford, a black slave boy in Kansas, "freed" from slavery by John Brown in a shootout that leaves his father dead. John Brown mistakes him for a girl because of a sackloth garment he is wearing at the time, and the boy decides for various...
Hello,
If there is already a thread for this show, I must have missed it, and I apologize.
I am curious if anyone out there has been watching True Detective on HBO. The season finale was last night and if anyone has been following it I would like to know their thoughts on it.
Personally, I was...
"which is beyond a pity because if more people were taught personal responsibility (and I believe there is no point in human history in which this was not true) maybe 'hero' and 'saint' would be redundant because we would all be making better choices."
This is the crux of it. Man must be taught...
I think the answer to that depends on who does the reading. Some people just love specific historical periods and places. Feeling connected to the subject matter in Oscar made me enjoy it much more.
I liked both. I thought the book was pretty decent, although it took me forever to get through it. And the movie actually made me appreciate it a little more.
Wow, hadn't heard about that one. Just read the splash on Cornwell's site. Uhtred finally goes to retake Bebbanburg, and I can't get it in the U.S. till January???!!
Bought Shadow Country by Peter Matthiessen. I bought it on kindle and had no idea how long it is. Been reading for days and my...
A Place Beyond the Pines :star3:1/2
Ryan Gosling stars as a near-do-well stunt motorcycle driver who finds out he has a son with a woman he had a one nighter with. He turns to robbing banks to try to provide money for the woman and his child.
Bradley cooper plays an ambitious beat cop, the...
