I would have to disagree Meadow. God, in the Bible generally appeared in a personal manner to a very select few. Personal communication (like speaking to Elijah in a still, small voice) is different than signs and wonders (allowing Elijah to call down fire from heaven onto the altar in the...

The Fall - Camus :star4: Thoroughly enjoyed this. I know now, that there are lots of deep philosophical questions to ponder when reading Camus, but I have found the two I've read now to be for the most part enjoyable, beautifully written morality stories. And I can't help but laughing out loud...

Louis L'Amour : The Walking Drum

Nice! So that's how you get something moved along your TBR list.... :) Let me know how you like it. I thought it was a great adventure story, and I feel like I learned a whole lot.

Louis L'Amour : The Walking Drum

To be honest I didn't either. But wow! It was great. He did a really nice job of presenting the way Western Europe was viewed by the more advanced civilizations of the east, and the disparities in education that existed. In the author's notes he mentioned how he thought it was a shame that we...

Louis L'Amour : The Walking Drum

The Walking Drum - Louis L'Amour :star4: The story of a youth in 12th century Brittany, Matthurin Kerbouchard, whose home on the coast of Armorica is destroyed by a vicious local baron. Kerbouchard escapes into the galley of a slave ship in a desperate attempt to find his father, so together...

Ryan Adams does not negotiate with terrorists

Hannity is just a big embarrassment. He's part of the reason the far right has fallen so far out of touch with normal people. I tune in every now and then just for entertainment. I wonder if he knows people are laughing at him? Or if he cares? I watched Glenn Beck become more and more measurably...

    Pacific Rim

A summer blockbuster that is too short?? Now I am really interested. I saw Wolverine last weekend. It really sort of blew. And it was way too long.

    Interesting Religious Stuff

I get the Times and I remember reading this article. I also saw something about it on the Nightly News. I thought there would be more uproar about his statements, but they seem to not have caused much fuss. Must be a sign of the times. I'm not Catholic, but I tend to agree with what he said. The...

    New James Lee Burke

Light of The World – James Lee Burke :star3: So, I finished this over the weekend, and have mixed feelings. Burke's writing is, as always, a pure pleasure to read, but.... this one just seemed to drag a little bit for me. Too many repetitive themes and too many philosophical digressions into...

    Recently purchased DVDs

:rofl My favorite was when Danny Vermin parks his car, and somebody tells him it's a handicapped space : "I am handicapped.... I'm psychotic." Can't wait.

Transcendent Reads - your thoughts and lists

Oh yeah! To Kill a Mockingbird. I forgot that one. Also one I would consider transcendent. I think I re-read it about once every two summers or so. If it speeds Burke along your TBR list, there's this :) And it just keeps coming with him. Beyond "descriptive prose", he writes things that are...

Transcendent Reads - your thoughts and lists

Here's a start.... The Bible To put it succinctly, no other book has had such a profound effect on the way I live and behave. Not that I am a perfect Christian (no such thing), but I frame everything I do for better or worse within the concepts and teachings of this book. The Hobbit & The...

Reza Aslan's Fox interview propels his book to #1 on Amazon

Looks pretty interesting... might have to add to the propulsion.

Windows 8 : Anybody else using it?

Yes. You will likeitalot. I wish I could go back to it... I hate it when "upgrades" turn out to be downgrades.

    Who likes Kungfu flicks?

Watched Bodyguards and Assassins last night. Stars Donnie Yen and a bunch of other people I am pretty sure I have seen in other movies. Pretty cool! There is a great scene where a character called "The Beggar" brutally holds off about fifty assassins with an iron fan. Fun stuff.

Windows 8 : Anybody else using it?

Cool. I went from MacOS (which I loved) to Windows 7. I thought, "OK, this is windows but more Mac-like". I liked it a little less, but got used to it and actually really began to like it. Then I got "upgraded" to 8 and ...... wow. This blows. I can't figure out how to do much of anything. It's...
