I know that a lot of people, including me, loved Susanna Clarke's wonderful book Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, so I just wanted to share this information: The shortstory collection The Ladies of Grace Adieu to be published in October. To see cover, follow the link...
About children trying to escape from Hailsham: It didn't happen while Kathy & co were there, I think it was just a rumour going around: I think some girl had tried to go through the woods and ended up being killed by some wild animal.Very possibly a rumour started to prevent the students from...
ROFL!! "Romancing the porcelain"! That's the best thing I ever heard! Wow, I would never have thought it possible to make puking sound glamorous, but you did! :D

I just posted a link to this website in a thread, and then I realized I should really share it with the rest of you as well, in case you've missed it. Ultra-condensed versions of your favourite books await!
Me too! :) I read it in school, but back then I was to young and untrained in the art of reading ;), and I didn't understand that Ms. Austen was being Ironic and Critical of Society ;). I just thought they were rather silly and drank alot of tea. Since then I've read many of Ms. Austen's works...
Most certainly.
BTW, and this is not very important, but it's just bugging me: I never managed to figure out what the four donations would be, before someone "completed" (and btw, I thought that expression was perhaps the most horrible thing in the whole story, that clinical "completion"...
I don't know anyone who does what you describe, but I have noticed that when a highly attractive book comes out (i.e. something we've all been waiting for and everyone wants to read, for example the latest Harry Potter or Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) there is a competition about who reads it...
I have too agree with you, Brys. I read The Belgariad and The Mallorean as a teenager and loved them. But later when I read The Elenium, I found it to be practically the same book. I gave him a final chance a few years ago with The Redemption of Althalus but had to give it up halfway through...
Will the snow never go away?! Just when it has actually thawed enough that you can walk through town without risking life and limb it starts snowing again. I'm sick of winter! I want spring!
I agree with you that Ishiguro wants the reader to empathize with the Hailsham kids, but I also think your reaction to the book is what makes it interesting - your intellect tells you that what is being done to these people are just horrible, but at the same time, Kathy's dispassionate way of...
But wasn't this the whole point of the story: That they accepted everything as something completely normal? That they were so brainwashed by society that the fact that they were bred for the sake of their organs only didn't cause them to rebel at all? Even though they harbored the hope that they...
OK, as kind of a newbie, how does the Book of the Month discussion work? When do we start discussing? Or can we start now, but with spoilers? Reason I ask is because I read the book already, but I don't want to spoil the fun for anyone whose not finished it yet. :)
The wee small hours of the morning, or of the night: From midnight and as long as I can stay awake ;). It's quiet, no one will disturb you, it's cosy, I just like it!
Worm-meat or reincarnation?
Rosie Perez. But I also just realized, as I was watching reruns of Sex and the City, that SJP has a really annoying laugh.
What movie do you love that everybody else hates?
Hurray! Another J.V. Jones reader! :D She's my favourite fantasy author, both as a writer and as a person (she's supernice and always used to answer all her emails). I haven't read the Sword of Shadows series (still waiting for Sword from Red Ice to come out), but I can really recommend her Book...
Well, I'm probably forgetting some really good books, but I like this one:
"A storm is rolling in, and that always makes me a little sad and wistful so I got it in my head to set to paper all these things that have got us this far on our way through this heathen land. Its been a sorrowful...
I loved this book! It's got alot of ambiance in my opinion. It reads alot like another great book in that genre: Dracula. If you like vampire books but are tired of the "shag 'em and slay 'em" books, this is a nice change. I personally like reading books written in letter form, and didn't mind...
