Everything I need to know about the English, I learned from mysteries.

You right, CGW, I've noticed the same stereotypes in English murder mysteries. Another one I see a lot is that every Englishman (and woman) is capable of murder and deceit. But I guess that's and important piece in making the story more mysterious or, it would be too easy to spot the murderer...

    The official 2012 apocalypse thread

Sounds good to me! :D I personally feel that 2012 is a little late for the end of an age. I think we're already into a new age, I just hope that it turns out to be a little less bleak than the last.

Thank you, I've actually been looking for this book but couldn't remember the title!!

    Childhood books

Those were some of my favourites too! I also liked the Cuckoo Clock one... Remember how the clock only went up to the year 2000? At the time I thought I'd never see the year 2000, it seemed so far away. :) I read everything I could find when I was a kid, so I'll never be able to remember all...

    Hardcovers or paperbacks?

I love small paperbacks, I find them so much more reader-friendly. Hardcovers are nice to look at, but I don't enjoy reading them as much.

    Book recommendations for a preteen?

I forgot my personal favourite, anything by Jules Verne! But I'd steer clear of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea unless you can find an abridged version. Verne goes on and on and on listing fish all through the novel that would put a lot of people off the story. Great novel though! :)

    Book recommendations for a preteen?

I second the nomination for Mr. Popper's Penguins, but it might be beneath his reading level. Here were some of my favourites as a kid: -anything by Monica Hughes (mostly sci-fi/fantasy, all geared toward young adults, very clean) -anything by Agatha Christie -anything by Sir Arthur Conan...

    Animal Fantasy Suggestion

While it may not be your typical fantasy, Orwell's Animal Farm fits your criteria and certainly is a good read.

    I Can't Finish

While the book sounds very interesting, keep in mind there's a reason that Jane Austen didn't write it. The story is supposed to be about Emma's growth as a character, and while many people will wonder why Mr. Knightely put up with her, I don't think it would make for nearly as good a story...

    I Can't Finish

Just curious, what's the book about? I like the title... Don't feel badly about not finishing the book if you can't get into it. Maybe in a few years you'll come back to it and appreciate it more. Or maybe it's not worth the paper it's printed on, in which case you shouldn't waste your time on it.

    Favorite/Least Favorite Smells

My favourite smell is the garden just after the rain. My very least favourite is the dog after she's been caught out in the rain. My cat's litter box is up there too on my least favourite smell list.

The new economy of book publishing

I imagine electronic books are the way of the future. It's hard to imagine right now, but my great-grandmother wouldn't believe her eyes if she saw the world today. Like all change, I'm apprehensive... I love me books! I've tried reading books on my computer and didn't like the experience. I...
