I haven't read the Martin books, but I did read all of Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Triliogy...which was a big time investment but fun all the same. I like Sanderson's magic system and he's generally upheld as an author that is very good at world building.
Vivian Vande Velde has some odd type books that are relatively kid safe.
I liked The Cry of the Icemark by Stuart Hill. The first is better than the rest of the series.
I agree with your son about The Golden Compass...thing just droned on and on.

I've never actually finished anything I've started to read on a kindle, but I've read books on my computer...so I suppose that counts for having read an e book.
Ender in Exile (3/5 stars) Surprisingly semi boring audio CD to listen to. This is a post Ender's Game tale written fairly recently. All in all, not worth reading or listening to...just read the original story and enjoy that.
Edition 2 just released.
The kindle version will be free on Monday Feb 25 and Tuesday Feb 26, 2013. Otherwise, it's $1.99.
The paperback, kitted with the spiffy new cover is $9.99.

Which genre would you like suggestions in?

I can help a little with science fiction, YA, some fantasy, mystery, Christian, thriller, but that's about it.
Mmm, I sympathize. My artistic skills are right around 0. It's good to have talented friends. Maybe try networking with artists.
Cover creation is important; hard work too.
