I've seen scattered episodes of the TV show. That's what got me interested in reading the books. No, haven't seen the whole series though...only like 2-3 episodes. What I saw was awesome. I think the first 5 ish episodes cover only one book. I'm starting book two soon.
Ray Bradbury was good in high school, but I didn't care too much for the Martian Chronicles...I know that might be considered unspeakably horrific in some circles, but it bored me.
Bookmaned, have you read Brandon Sanderson?
Libraries are a bit odd about how they categorize books too...sometimes books by the same author from the same series end up in two different areas....fiction and mystery or children's and YA.
I heard a few of the Percy Jackson books...they were decent. The movie was laughable, which is a shame because the story was a neat blending of myth and modern.
It was a fairly good adaptation as far as I could tell. Of course, you can't get too much into the head of a first person narrator with a movie.
Stay away from the other two books!!!!! :-P I'm sure opinions will be all over the board but my two cents are this: the first was awesome, the second...
I get ya Lovecraftian. I tried to write a normal book and it turned into something sort of science fictiony....was really going for normal YA fiction. YA is wide open though...almost anything can be categorized as YA.
Although paranormal isn't really my thing, Vivian Vande Velde writes some...
I avoid paranormal generally speaking, though I have read a few that I liked. There was one series about a girl who turned into a half-spirit demon thing...the plot didn't interest me so much as the character and writing style of the author.
Some science fiction can get a little paranormal-y
I don't usually re-read books. It had better be really, really good to make me want to read it again. Proofreading one of my own stories doesn't count of course because it's a necessity. (I guess there's more motivation to make sure the first time that I like what I'm writing.) Anyway, I have...
Listening to books on a tape, CD, or MP3 is just as good as reading. I actually think in some cases it's a lot better. Some productions are full cast, but most are just one narrator. The advantage is that talented narrators have wide experience with bringing books to life with their tone. The...
Stick with the first one only. That's by far the best. It sort of felt like the others were just because the first did well and they were like "shoot, we need a sequel"
Carolyn Meyer has a great series called Young Royals...about queens and princesses from the past, mostly the royals from England. I think the most recent one is Mary Queen of Scots.
Deadly Pink by Vivian Vande Velde - another foray into virtual reality video games; probably mostly aimed at teen girls...a nice change from the usual tween fare.
