    Sherman Alexie

I just saw an interview with Sherman Alexie by Bill Moyer. On PBS (of course...). It was very good and I am now inspired to read some of Alexie's work. Has anyone read Blasphemy? It is his newest one, I believe. He seems to be an interesting man - an old soul, I'd say if I were into that sort of...

    Which e-reader do you own?

I have a Nook Color but if I had it to do all over again, I'd go for the Kindle. There are many interesting references to things online that can be downloaded to a Kindle but I don't think I have ever seen one that says "Can be downloaded to your Nook" I like the way my Nook works - though it is...

April 2013: Erin Morgenstern, The Night Circus

A much better book with a circus setting... I wanted to like Night Circus. I really did. I was looking forward to a great read and have always enjoyed books centered around the circus - Geek Love is one of my favorite books. I found myself feeling forced to continue reading (as I try to...

    F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby

Well, it made my day! I love picking up bits of info - especially about books that I consider important in my "reading history"...

    F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby

No kidding! I didn't know that. Quite an interesting bit of info about a memorable scene (for me at least) from Gatsby... Thanks for letting me know that!

    F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby

I found Fitzgerald's writing style to be eloquent, visually evocative, and sophisticated. Which is one of the primary aims of the book isn't it - to portray ultimate sophistication during its' time? His visual imagery is incredible - I will always have in my minds eye the sign on the shabby...

Ambrose Bierce: An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

This is one of my favorite stories of all time - talk about a surprise ending! Great - really great - as good today as the day it was written!

The Supreme Court and gay marriage: a reading list

I just read an article in the LA Times that has some interesting suggestions for "current events" reading... Plaintiffs Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, with Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, on the steps of the National Archives in Washington. (Jewel Samad / AFP / Getty Images / March 25, 2013)...

    Recently Finished

I just finished "Lie Down In Darkness" by William Styron - excellent. I must now read his other book - having read Sophie's Choice a few times a number of years ago...

    Scarlett O'Hara

I have always admired Scarlett. She was full of "piss and vinegar" as my granddaddy used to say. She was tough. She knew what had to be done and she did it. Sometimes at the expense of others, sometimes at her own expense. She was bright and loved the land as she was taught. She worked hard and...

Book Collecting and the folks who indulge

I started this topic years ago and see it is fading with time. I am still an avid reader and book collector. in 2008 I complained about lack of space for my books - well, we bought an apartment building in Oakland, CA. Our apartment is the entire 2nd floor (over 1700 sq feet). We did complete...

Do You Think Books Turned Into Movies Do It Justice?

In almost every case, I'd say the book is a much more satisfactory experience. Authors get to tell you what is in the character's mind, his/her motivation. You also learn the backstory - what brought the characters to the place/situation they involved in. Sometimes it is possible that the folks...

Who is your favourite author, and why?

My first book at the age of about 4 was a book of Poe. My Mother read to us from 101 Famous Poems regularly and I loved The Raven so she bought me a book of Poe. I will never forget the Pit and the Pendulum with the blade swinging closer - ever closer. Here is a great YouTube video of James...

    A Bestseller You Hated

I really hated House of Leaves though I wanted to like it. It was supposed to be so "revolutionary" and awesome. I just found it very tedious. Also, The Host by Stephanie Meyer. I couldn't even finish it (which I rarely ever do. I finish almost every book I start...)

What does reading a book mean to you?

I suppose I read for the same reason I first started reading as a child - to discover other worlds beyond the borders of the world in which I live. I get to have experiences and adventures that I'd never get to have without reading. Also, I love books - the feel of them, the look of them...
