I'm a large neohadrosaur, eating grass. (Its more of a non-linear website than a book, but it might as well be a book. Its certainly written as if it could be a non-fiction book.)

I'd say its fairly good if you're into science fiction and wouldn't mind some philosophy mixed in.
if you find the first few chapters off-putting, you could probably skip to chapter 4 or 5, you wouldn't miss any huge plot points. After that...
Walking with dinosaurs, walking with prehistoric beasts, before the dinosaurs, walking with cavemen, and some special features dvds. That was one good package deal.

He might like the Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart if he's into fantasy. The reading level isn't too high, and the stories are interesting.
Though the books do seem to get progressively more violent toward the end.
