June 2008 - Book Group Suggestions

I'm not sure, since I have not read it yet but the subject matter, the story of the author and the story of how the book came to be are certainly interesting.

    Zadie Smith

I read On Beauty, White Teeth and the Autograph Man, I liked On Beauty best of three but didn't care for her style at all. I can see what Beer good is saying, I liked her characters and there were great parts in all the books, for me they just didn't fall together well or something, they did...

Welcome to Andy from Social Knowledge LLC

Hello & welcome Janet :) I was a Washington state girl myself until recently, I lived in Vancouver & Olympia. My step father and many of his friends were muscians and we saw many local bands of many types play, he also worked at Portland Music Co. for awhile. I wonder if we know anyone in...

June 2008 - Book Group Suggestions

I like grabbing random new books of the "just in shelf" at the library all the time, like today this one caught my eye Amazon.com: The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America: David Hajdu: Books (I thought it would be interesting because there is so much current...

June 2008 - Book Group Suggestions

I think our last 2 books have not been very appealing to a large audience, Madame Bovary was hard for some of us to get into and fiinish, and the First Circle was hard for some of us to find. I think we need to mix it up a bit more, if we stick with classics, or any single genre, interest will...

    choosing BOM

I would appreciate knowing sooner as well, since I have to order all my books too. This month I got lucky and The First Circle just came in yesterday's mail but sometimes it takes much longer.

Kim Edwards: The Memory Keeper's Daughter

I'll have to look for the movie, although I usually end up liking the book better, I still always have to watch the movie if there is one, if not I would always wonder.

Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code

I think many folks find it much easier to criticize something than to praise it. I know I often can point out flaws in a book that made me dislike it, but I have a hard time saying what makes me like a story.

Kim Edwards: The Memory Keeper's Daughter

I liked the Memory Keeper's Daughter, but I've not read anything else by her. I know she has a collection of short stories called, The Secrets of a Fire King, as well but I'm not a fan of short story collections in general. I would read another novel by her though. Amazon.com: The Secrets of a...

    May 2008 - Voting

I ordered an old paperback version from Ebay, it was $3 with shipping. I saw that they had a few copies available (1 signed hardcover) and some sellers ship worldwide if anyone's still looking.

    Gustave Flaubert: Madame Bovary

That thought occurred to me too, that Emma would probably be diagnosed with depression on prescribed meds & therapy. I wondered considering his father's treatment of his mother, if Charles would consider himself as being very romantic. His devotion to his wife was much different than the...
