Yes, I completely agree with that. However sometimes I don't mind a bit of a mindless read. I don't know if that makes sense? I'm glad I read it after Perdido street station. I hope her next one's in the series are better.
I'm reading the next steampunk novel on my list, Soulless. It's got a strong romantic element which may not be everyone's cup of tea. I'm only a couple of chapters in and it's the author's first book so the writing sometimes feels a little stilted, or clunky. I know she's written another two...
I definitely think listening to audio stories is reading. You are still exposed to a narrative, plot, characters just the way you are when reading with your own eyes. The images that form in your mind are the same as the images that would be formed if reading. The only difference is that the...
Well I can certainly see why this book is included in the Steampunk genre, but it's also a blend of fantasy and sci-fi. I really liked his characters, although I wanted Motley to get more of a come-uppance at the end by the hands of the Weaver!
Great book, I slowed my reading down at the end...
You know that you're enjoying a book when you're doing the dishes and you can't stop thinking about it. This is what's happening with Perdido street station. I'm halfway through. I have this irrational, inordinate fear of caterpillars, so there's been some squeamishness happening on my...
I'm really enjoying it so far, it's very readable. I haven't come across The Weaver as yet. I''ve tried escaping to the bedroom with my coffee for a quick read this morning whilst my youngest was napping and my three year old was colouring. Just not enough hours in the day......
Love letters, Katie Fforde. Not one of her best, but a nice romantic read to curl up with, especially as it was 8 degrees yesterday and hailing!! :stars3:
Well last night I picked up Perdido street station, which is one of the titles on my newly created list of steampunk reading. Only chapter three so far, and boy is it one heavy tome!!!
Hi Dima, I've been on the Adventure Gamers forum for many years now, and when finding new games to play I actually make sure there's a review on their site before purchasing. I've also played Black Mirror, but not the second one. How are you finding it so far? I have Syberia one and two at...
My only worry is that I'm reading really slowly these days due to time constraints, and I think the less limits set the better. You're doing this to broaden reading horizons, so there should be minimal limits in my opinion. If you can't read the book suggested, say you gave it a try and move...
When I'm studying I can usually read more than one. I agree with SFG75, non-fiction and fiction to balance well together. Non for during daylight hours and fiction for at night.
Sense and sensibility and sea monsters, Ben H Winters. I felt like this plodded along in most parts, this could be that I already knew the plot well? I wouldn't say I exactly enjoyed it, but it wasn't the worst read ever. A bit ho hum but I think I will read the Pride and Prejudice one also...
Recently a fairly prominent Australian writer spoke about the spark being lit for her son in regards to reading and how she now needed to blow very gently and then fan it into flames. She described it so much more eloquently and I have repeated it very badly, but I think you get the gist. I...
Very interesting. My last job was at a university library and we had three inmates that we did document delivery for so they could study. One notorious inmate who went on a shooting rampage sometime during the 80's was doing his Phd in philosophy. I always wonder what he got out of those...
Kind of, an example is the detective from the game Still Life, where she goes to process a crime scene and uses the clues found to keep the story going. You also get to know about her as a character and she talks to other colleagues, suspects etc. until you solve the crime at the end.
Ok, I'm actually being a little misleading with this thread title. I'm a massive Adventure gamer, and some of the games I play can be described as interactive fiction. The game normally begins with some kind of animated sequence that opens up the narrative and introduces the protagonist and...
Unfortunately libraries only have a limited amount of space. If a library was filled only with older type books then people would stop going there because they would have read most of the titles. There's also the question of council budgets. This money needs to be spent - use it or lose it...
