The first Dune book is complex, but I followed the story without any problems. With the other ones I was always asking myself "Why is this happening? Is this even important?" Halfway through God Emperor I figured out the answer to Question #2: no ;).

I loved the opening sequence. It was very creepy and attention-getting. Everything else, while adequate, didn't quite live up to those first few minutes.

Yeah, it's available on Hulu. The original ending was more downbeat: I'm glad they changed the ending. That seems way too bleak. And yeah, the scene where Scott watches his daughter's movie was rough. I must say, it really was a great peformance all around.
Hmm, are you saying you'd like to see ads with actors portraying characters from the book? I remember reading about a YA series that was promoted by doing such a thing, although I can't recall the name of the books. I want to say the author's name was Kersten Hamilton . . .?
