    Virginia Woolf

Orland has extremely well-written, sensuous, poetic descriptions which makes Woolf's ordinary world mystical and brimming with life. As for Orlando, his/her ordeal crosses centuries and transcends genders, making him/her a fascinating window to analyse History and the world from several angles...

Up/Downloading books as torrents Right or Wrong?

Can't stand reading on the computer. To me it's not a moral problem, it's just that it's a pain in the ass to read them that way. Even with the free classics I still prefer to buy them in book form.

    Parallel Reading

I have the habit of reading a fiction and a non-fiction books at the same time.

    Castro health watch

Well, let's hope the Cubans are more enthusiastic about a democracy than the Iraqi people were ;)

Saddam Hussein to be hanged TONIGHT!

This caught me completely by surprise. I spent the morning shopping and only found out when I came home around lunch time. I just couldn't believe it they had done it so soon. I regret the decision to execute Saddam: firstly I object to the death penalty, and am disappointed the USA, in their...

    Are you a cynic?

Is that what cynicism is? I always saw it as pessimism with a pinch of humour :D

    Castro health watch

Should I take it you are enthusiastic about a civil war?

    Castro health watch

No one likes to give up power. I doubt Raul and the military junta that rules over Cuba will just let people swarm the streets asking for freedom without doing anything to stop them. A civil war is a possibility, I think.

How Many Books Do You Read in a Year (approx.)?

Well, I'm not starting another fiction book until January, so I can say this year I've read 51 fiction books, and probably another 20 non-fiction ones.

    2006 - Best Reads

I had a pretty good reading year, but I'd highlight: Crime and Punishment, my introduction to Dostoevsky, and possibly one of the best books I've ever read, José Saramago's Seeing and The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, which cemented my love for this great author, and Thomas Mann's Death...

Who here speaks more than one language?

Now I'm not really sure. I'm under the impression Esperanto only has one suffix for all nouns, so can there be a distinction between masculine and feminine words?

    Favorite Female Writers

Confronted with this question, I realised I seldom read female writers. Well, I like Emily Brönte's Wuthering Heights enough to consider it one of the greatest novels ever written. The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter left me wanting to read more Carson McCullers. Virginia Woolf writes beautiful...

Who here speaks more than one language?

Really? Why would you feel more confused?

    Iran earns U.N. sanctions

Well, some people could argue that they are planning ahead, so that when oil runs out their country won't be dependable on other nations. Some scandinavian countries, rich in oil too, also use other energy sources domestically so they're not dependable on oil. But I don't buy this arguement :D

Why is everyone forgetting Castro's second in command, his brother Raul?

Who here speaks more than one language?

Declensions apart, it shouldn't be difficult: it has the same syntax as English, there's only one plural form, there's only one gender. It's practically custom made for English speakers :D Bonan ŝancon, Valkyrie.

    Philip Roth: Everyman

Concetta, you should give American Pastoral a try, if you are interested in Philip Roth. The Plot Against America has equally beautiful prose that transmits genuine emotions, but the ending collapses in a silly deus ex machina, which is disappointing as most of the book is brilliant. I...

    John Milton: Paradise Lost

Twelve in my edition. I loved Paradise Lost. But I agree with William Blake that the poem loses steam as it moves toward its conclusion. The last four books are unbearable. I adore the first four, with Satan and his host being plunged into Hell, the journey to Eden, the temptation, etc. Books...

Who here speaks more than one language?

The real international language is Esperanto, which no one actually speaks

    James Joyce

The Dedaduls of Portrait has nothing to do with the vaguely-sketched character of the same name in Ulysses. And I don't recognise the same style in both novels. If I had, both would have been unbearable for me to read ;)
