I'm in an island with a shotgun, hiding from my other 9th grade classmates who are out to kill me (and themselves) in an attempt to be the last one standing in a state-sponsored reality TV show.
Ok, some feedback from people smarter and wider-read than myself. More Malaysian works!
A Malaysian Journey, Rehman Rashid
Rojak, Amir Muhammad
Days of Change, Chuah Guat Eng
Ripples, Kow Shih-Li (short story collection)
Malaysian Tales, edited by Daphne Lee
Ripples was very highly...
That would mean you've gotten the Cordelia's Honor? The second book in that volume (Barrayar) won the Hugo Award (sorta like the Oscars of SF), and deservedly so.
You've got to tell me how you like it.
Ok, a few that I've thought of:
The Harmony Silk Factory, Tash Aw
Map of the Invisible World, Tash Aw
The Gift of Rain, Tan Twan Eng
Evening is the Whole Day, Preeta Samarasan
Getting some 'acquaintances' to recommend more.
As for books that mention Malaysia:
Net Force, Tom Clancy
2666...
bg: Hmm, I have to say I've always had a negative impression of the Hunger Games. I will try to hunt that down next time and try it out. I've not read Battle Royale either, but I know of it's pretty famous premise, of course. On surface they did seem similar, which is why I stayed away.
Peder...
Inside the belly of a humongous turtle, which also happens to be a floating island, trying to learn the secret to controlling a 9 tail demon trapped in my body to harness it's destructive force for good.
Turtle <> Discworld, btw.
Saliotthomas, I just read this, LOl! I hope you did get over your rugby team image and got on with Under Heaven, because that was quite good. A return to form, I must say.
Anyway, I wanted to share this for those who hadn't seen it yet:
I've been indulging in some manga reading on my iPad (did I mention that I really really love my iPad? No? Maybe in another thread then). So I have this app called Manga Rock Unity (I know this sounds incredibly nerdy - bear with me...), and it basically is a tool that collates manga series and...
I will mention 2 books:
1. 2666, Roberto Bolano - incredibly dark, and made me angry in places. Won't be forgetting this soon.
2. The Historian, Elizabeth Kostova - Started with a bang, couldn't remember such an exhilarating start to a novel in a long time. Ended well, but along the way made...
Now I've not been to a cinema in many many months now, but I have to say that the problems you're describing seems horrible! We still have relatively well-behaved crowd in that there aren't too many people who talk incessantly, or reveal plotlines, etc. I mean if I were to have this experience...
A little quiet around here, isn't it? Hmm...
A very happy new year to every one! So since I had to write this thread in 2012 (2nd Jan, no less), I want to ask you all to find a book you'd otherwise not read, and read it this year.
Since that can be quite difficult, I will make it easier...
For ABC, and for those who are curious, I've taken pix of the journal and posted it here.
Just to give you an idea of what I mean by jogging your memories and changing your evaluations of books you've read (if you're not already doing it, that is).
