She was seventeen, still impressive. And she wrote the entire novel in seven weeks, if I recall correctly.
How so?
I disagree with this. I've written almost three books now. I say almost, I don't mean two and a half, or anything, but three incomplete (but all longer than 100,000 words each)...
Oh yay, another elitist, elitist-wannabe versus non-elitist argument. How did I miss this?
The elitists (well, why change a term that everyone knows) read good books. By that, I mean the writing is magnificent, the plots are mostly character-based.
The elitist-wannabes try to...
No, no, no, I don't blame Lolita at all. It shocked me, what she got up to, but I don't blame her for what Humbert the Horrible did.
When I say I think he loved her, I mean... well, what KC said, she said it better than I could.
Well, wow, what a question. Do you mean Lo as in the book? Or Lo as in the twelve-year old girl seduced by a middle age man?
If you mean the book, then that is a loaded question anyway (it's surely the most discussable (new word, heh!) book around), but if you mean the little girl, then...
Hi ABC, great to see you here.
If I may, too, I would just like to clear something up... in that other thread, you say we've had our fun, now it's their turn (and Peder-stylee, whoever "their" is, say ABC, Shade, Stewart...). Does that mean that ideally, we (we being you, Still, Pontalba...
Shade, wow, what a post.
Gotta love (and make an attempt at understanding) a narrator like that!
There's a lot of links (in the depths of the Lolita thread, most likely) relating to Pale Fire...
Peder, I'm sure, has read it. It's the one book we all hum and har over making an attempt...
Wait... did someone mention Pale Fire? :D
Stewart: huge groans at the horce racing reference, but I think we all felt like that the first time we read Lolita.
Still: some of your posts are very valuable, as you well know! :D
Aww Shade, don't be wary, we're a harmless bunch over in that thread (although there is a bit of pointless banter) and love to play with new-to-the-thread Lolita lovers.
Besides, forget the past 150+ pages and just pretend they aren't there. We will happily re-discuss anything, and if need...
Stalking the Lolita-readers are we, Still? ;)
Beer good, I think, is reading it too. Or wanting to, at least. And one of our sadly-departed members has recently read it...
Well, exactly. ;)
I don't agree with that.
In that case, it most definitely is not a shame. ;) Nobody is that self-sufficient.
And just to bring this thread back to books, I didn't finish The Secret Garden at school. Hated it.
Hi Peder, I saw in another Nabokov thread that you didn't like Mary so much as the others. Why is that? Is it written in a different style, or is just because it was his debut novel?
:D
:D
To be fair, whilst it is ridiculous to lump such things as "road rage" under some disorder, modern life is more stressful than "when I was a lad..." times, with the demise of the nuclear family, more diverse career choices and even lifestyle choices, and of course, transport. People...
Ooh what a great idea! Beer good, I think, has just bought Lolita. ABC and Stewart have recently read it. It will give me a chance to read my new annotated copy! Yay!!
Peder, thanks for narrowing all those choices down. I think I shall be looking for Harlequins, whatever we decide to "go...
