I also use Goodreads. It is very convenient because I also use it to find potential books and track what I have read. When I see a book that looks good I just click the “want to read” button by the book and it adds it to my To Read shelf. And since I read ebooks almost exclusively nowadays, I...
Sure, I have family members who have had such experiences and are adamant that there is no rational explanation. I have had similar things happen to me in my life for which at the time I had no rational explanation. I lived alone for the bulk of my 20s and every once in a while in my apartment...
I must be one of the oddballs. I don’t see the attraction in the feel and smell of them. I am actually annoyed when I have to read a paper book nowadays. I love being able to just set the e-reader on something and read hands free (particularly convenient when you want to wrap up in a...
Hmmm, what about the Hunger Games trilogy. No sex or language but it does have violence and some dark themes. The heroine of the story is a teenage girl.
I would MUCH rather my daughter read it than Twilight. :)
Beer Good is simply offering a friendly suggestion: one that would be wise to heed. It is obvious you are not fluent in English. That isn’t an insult. You are functional in English. I am functional in Spanish and Khmer but not fluent. It would be foolish of me to write a book in those...
True, but it is also correct that one shouldn’t pass that off as fact…yet.
But I also don’t think there is anything wrong with rating the likelihood that any given unproven belief is true. I believe fairly strongly that there is extraterrestrial life out there. Intelligent life? Less...
That is pretty cool. I would definitely take advantage of that if I were back in the States but I am always stationed overseas. If anyone learns of a library doing this online I would be very interested.
As for the trials that is because it went against the Church’s dogmatic view of the time. You won’t get any argument from me on how religion has stunted the advancement of science at points in our history. I think we can all agree we shouldn’t put people in jail for having unorthodox ideas...
Well this is a private board and it can have any rules it wants. Freedom of speech does not apply here, though I have no problem at all with the rules of this board. I think the rules it has are perfect for this environment. But I am talking about in society in general (in the US at least)...
I disagree with all this talk about respecting beliefs though. I'll respect a person's RIGHT to believe what he or she wants but as for the belief itself? That is fair game. Belief should be challenged and even ridiculed. If the belief can stand up to that then it might be worth keeping...
Yeah, I can see them being good especially for people who travel alot. When I travel I bring both my Kindle and my laptop. At home there is no disadvantage to having dedicated devices. But if I was flying a couple times a week I could see how an iPad might be the way to go.
Yeah I like the size of the regular Kindle just like I like the size of traditional paperbacks. I HATE hardback books, in large part because of their size. I think the DXes are good for viewing full scale PDFs and such. But I don't need that.
For me ereaders are superior to traditional...
What does "borrowing" an ebook entail? I read ebooks almost exclusively and I either buy them from Amazon or I download ones for free that are in the public domain (such as most of the classics). Are you able to borrow ebooks for free that are not in the public domain?
Good interview, though I disagree with him when he says:
I did! The first time I saw Jean Luc Picard reading one in a Star Trek:TNG episode I wanted one. ;)
Spammers will always find ways to get their stuff out there and savvy consumers will find aways to sift through it. Hell, most...
May you be touched by his noodly appendage.
But as for the OP? No, I do not believe in an afterlife or a prelife. Yeah we can say that our "energy" continues to exists and if that gives you comfort then great. But that energy isn't "you". When your brain ceases to function, who you are...
I was working at the US embassy in Libya. And then everything went to hell. At a moments notice we had to evacuate. We could only take what we could fit in a suitcase. We had to leave everything behind: cars, the bulk of our clothes, dishes, the kids toys, paintings. I would have had to...
I am still have a 1st generation Kindle and use it all the time. I also have an iphone with the Kindle app, which is convenient when I find myself standing in line or having to wait somewhere when I don't have my kindle with me. But a good chunk of my day at work is spent looking at a computer...
