Books with photos of the author

You must have all had a book where either in the front or back cover there's a photo of the author. Usually in black and white, staring into the camera or off at a distance, in what one can only presume is meant to be an intellectual pose. Can we ban them? They're very distracting, as...

    Where is she?

We may be unknown to one another, however you remind me of a young slut I used to go to school with. She used to stand in the playground near the big tree and pull her skirt up to show the boys her knickers. And she used to let the boys catch her during kiss-catch. Unfortunately the little...

Yes it is. May Day. Shortly I will be finding the nearest maypole and having a lovely dance round it.

The English: A Portrait of a People

I found it easy enough to bear, but there's a picture of him in the front cover of my copy, which is a little off-putting. He's got one of those faces I'd happily slap all day long. If your copy has a picture of him, I'd advise you to glue the the first few pages together, and then to the...

The English: A Portrait of a People

I picked this one up as I'm quite interested in national identity, especially Englishness, being that I am, erm, English. Anyway, it's by Jeremy Paxman; if you know anything about him I suppose that serves as a warning of sorts. It was an ok read. He details various discourses of...

Most Often Used References--books and sites

The Urban Dictionary entertains me. I'm rather easily amused though :o

Gideon Defoe: The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists.

Last night I dreamt of hams... Absolutely astounding! 10/10 from me. Critics have accused it of being the perfect holiday read - it's much more than that. Anyone's book shelf is simply incomplete without this gem. Although I must confess I'm having a few problems with the comprehension...

Another, is it time to legalize thread...

And I would argue that you are sadly mistaken! The films/documentaries etc are all being presented to you by the media in a certain way, and as such you can't generalise to the whole industry. Perhaps this is a difference between nations, but a quick trip down to any town's red light district...

    Seemingly. Sigh. Woe, etc.

    '... I don't get it!'

[Apologies if there's already a thread asking this, there's only so much delving into the archives one can do...] You know when everyone's banging on about a book. And you just can't see the attraction? Declare that book, and don't apologise. Voice your feelings! The book that...

Book found after 30 years in freezer

Well I can't blame you, it affects us all from time to time. Anyway I had another birthday, so maybe I'm not so young.

Indeed. But I too am simple. Simple young Freya.

Another, is it time to legalize thread...

A seedy side? I'd argue that the vast majority of ladies-of-the-night are women who are forced into it due to social and economic factors. It's rarely a choice, 'Oh, what shall I do with my life. I know! I'll sell my body!' It's women who are literally forced onto the streets. The...

Janwillem van de Wettering: Outsider In Amsterdam

I'm putting my money on, Veee-ter-ing. Most probably with good pauses where the hyphens are. Maybe I'm just doing the auf Deutsch thing. Or maybe, just maybe, I'm a linguistic genius?! Apologies for the off-topic nature of my post, novella. I do hope we can soon return to the topic of...
